Beta 10 is released, here's what's added/fixed:

* Fixed the problems with the Explorer dir tree (both the earlier more rare ones, and the one introduced in beta 9).

* Fixed some bugs in the shell extension (i.e. the Explorer right-click menu).

Enjoy!

Was NOT broke but NOW is:
Working Directory - Browse button (hangs application indefinetely)

Howdy. I'm running XP SP2 and beta 10.

Beta 10 throws an "Out of memory error" consistently when I try to do any tag manipulation on a particular set of mp3 files (Editing the tag, removing the tag). The tag version doesn't matter either.

This is consistent across reboots, multiple invocations of mp3ts etc.

I put the smallest file that reproduces this error here:

temp.mp3

Thanks, and thanks for a truly useful program.

Ivarr, I just analyzed the file, and the ID3v2 tag has serious corruption. To remove it, set the first byte of the file to 0 in a hex-editor, and then perform a "Remove junk data before first mp3 frame" repair procedure on it in Mp3/Tag Studio. This removes the corrupt ID3v2 tag, and you can re-tag it.

And dasanco, I'm looking into your reported problems, thanks a lot for the report!

Magnus,
I posted this in it's own thread before I noticed the dedicated "report bugs here" thread. Sorry about that.

Not sure if this is a bug, or if you have intended it for some other purpose, but in the advanced rename mode, when you right click and select <OldFileName> from the context menu, what gets inserted into the string template is actually <&OldFileName>. The "&" seems to make the template illegal, and it's removal allows the template to work as one would expect.
Keep up the good work.

Bruce.

Thanks for the report as always noddy, the same problem was reported three posts above yours in this thread, that's why I missed to reply to your seperate thread too. I will look into it.

Found another one, Magnus.
From within "Browse/edit Tags & Flags", if you copy all tag data, and then use "paste/insert only (don't overwrite existing data)", it DOES actually overwrite all previous data.

I just tried it and it worked perfectly here. Hmm, are you sure you understood this feature correctly? First of all, you misquoted the name, which is a little clue to this. The real name is "Insert (leave other existing tag versions in file)", i.e. it is not a merge of tag data in the same tag that is performed, it only means that if you previously only copied either the ID3v1 tag or the ID3v2 tag from a file to the clipboard, you will only write the ID3v1 tag or ID3v2 tag to the new file, leaving other previous tag versions in it. It does not mean that it will merge individual tag fields within the same tag version that you paste.

If you still think it's a bug, please give step-by-step instructions for how it can be reproduced.

Thanks for your report in any case.

Dasanco, there seems to be something strange going on in your computer. I cannot reproduce any of the problems you report, except for the one with the "&" character inserted in the templates when using the advanced mode menus (and I have fixed this one for the next release already).

For the "Sort list" problem, my guess is that you're trying to sort by a field that's not in your lists, and this won't work, the sorting can only be based on fields included in the lists. For the other ones I don't have a clue why they behave so strangely for you.

Can anyone else reproduce any of dasanco's reported problems?

Beta 11 is released, here's what's added/fixed:

* Added an option to rename macros (from their context menu in the macro window).

* Added an "invert selection" feature to the custom file selection box context menu.

* Added display of the frame codes for additional ID3v2 frames in the Advanced ID3v2 info box of the browse tool.

* Added enter as a hotkey for the write button in the Advanced ID3v2 info box of the browse tool.

* Fixed a bug that caused syntax errors when selecting template fields from the advanced mode context menu in all the tools (this bug was introduced in beta 10).

* Fixed a bug that made ID3v1/ID3v2 contents still show up in the preview dialog of the mass clean tool, even if the user had selected to remove the entire tags.

* Fixed a problem with colliding hotkeys in the mass set tool.

* Fixed a bug that still modified the file dates on files when writing their tags from the Advanced ID3v2 info box of the browse tool, even when the global setting to not modify file dates was active.

* Fixed a bug that made custom genres added from the global settings not show up in the genre drop-downs until after a program restart.

* Fixed a bug that made custom genres show in the genre drop-downs even though the program was in ID3v1-only mode (and hence they cannot be written to tags in that mode anyway).

* Fixed a startup problem that may occur in the special condition that a user doesn't have a C:-drive in the computer, and at the same time has corrupted the Mp3/Tag Studio main datafile.

Enjoy!

Thank you for the diligence ...

I reinstalled and uninstall each product and then manually deleted all remaining folders and files left behind by the uninstall. Also, manually cleaned the registry of remaining keys.

I then installed beta 11 ...

No longer an issue.
 * The "Working Directory - Browse button" is now functional.
 * The "&" character IS now fixed.

Two of the other three custom list issues are now solved.
 * "Invalid first entry" was due to misinterpretation of the "Include Field Headers" checkbox. sorry.
 * "Sort List Output" issue WAS due to the counterintuitive need for the field to be included in the "list", as you mentioned. It would be an excellent addition to your next release to make any "file" field sortable instead of any "list" field. It would make the function much more powerful without compromising any of it's currently functionality.

However the last item I have not found a solution. The <length> function is still missing.
  * When using the ‘Create custom lists’ function in ‘Advanced mode’ the resulted list does not include the length when inserted in the template. During further testing it was found that all four of the grouped fields (<Length>, <Sam. freq.>, <Ch. mode>, <Bitrate>) result in no entry in the created list. The rest of the standard fields do result in the appropriate text in the created list. Using the ‘Fixed field width’ option will insert blank spaces for each entry. For example using this template …
/<Length>-<Sam. freq.>-<Ch. mode>-<Bitrate>/
Creates this output …
/        -          -             -          /
However without 'Fixed field width' checked you simply receive...
/---/
What am I doing wrong?

Thanks again for the great product.

Whenever I've been using mp3 TS for a while, it starts to slow down after I've processed several (3 or 4) albums.  Eventually it gets so slow that it becomes almost unresponsive, and then I get this error:

"Thread creation error: Not enough storage is available to process this command."

I've got 2GB of RAM and 50GB of free hard drive space, so I'm not sure what the problem could be.  Memory leak maybe?  Although when I get this error mp3tag_s.exe is only using 33,940k.

3.5 beta 11, XP SP2

Any ideas?  Thanks!

Magnus,
Sorry, I just realised that I didn't get around to responding to your post about the pasting and previous tag versions thingy.
You are quite right. I HAD misinterpreted the function.
No dramas.

Magnus,
I'd just like to back up Dasanco's claim.
I just did a test, creating a list in advanced mode, and instead of using a hyphen as a delimiter, I used:

<Title>[NEWLINE]<Length>[NEWLINE]<Sam. freq.>[NEWLINE]<Ch. mode>[NEWLINE]<Bitrate>[NEWLINE]

and I got a text file with a title on line 1, lines 2-6 were blank, line 7 had the next title, lines 8-12 were blank etc etc.

Noddy and dasanco, there is something really strange going on here. I just executed your exact templates on several hundreds of mp3s with beta 11, and they all produced valid results (like e.g. "/4:15-44100 Hz-Stereo-192 kbps/").

Could you please post screenshots of your settings? (lets begin with the normal and extended settings of the list maker)

With your help I can hopefully get to the bottom of this problem.

And peepoop, your problem has been reported once before too, but I cannot reproduce it. :( Does this problem ("Thread creation error"...) happen to anyone else reading this?

Well, this IS bizarre!
I've just re-done the test (for the purposes of creating the screenshots), and whaddya know?
It's behaving itself.
I have this theory about computers.... they know when stupid people are watching, and they know when technicians are about... and when technicians (be it hardware or software) are about, the computers don't muck up. They're like those kids at the back of your 9th grade class... only mucking around when the teacher isn't looking....
...sorry, I digress.
(edit)
Just found out you can't upload zip files, so I've put the file here.
(end of edit)
Don't know what (or IF) I did anything differently today, but the results are certainly different. I'll keep playing with it and see if I can re-create the error, Magnus.

"Ah-HAH!" He cried.
Found it.
It would appear that you have to DISABLE advanced mode, make sure AT LEAST ONE of the filesize, bitrate, samp freq, or ch mode check boxes are ticked. Then, re-enter advanced mode, paste in your full string (a la my post from yesterday) and create the list. It will come out perfectly.
However, lets say you disable advanced mode, and only check 'title'. You then go to advanced mode, and paste in your complex argument, the text file will only have the title info parsed out.
Wierd.
Have fun with that one, Magnus! :)

Wow kudos to noddy. However my results were even MORE peculiar.

Since things are getting a bit more complex, let me simply use the following terms …

DEFAULT = With “Advance mode” unchecked
Field selection set to default - Title, Artist, Album, Year and Comment are checked
Then “Advance mode” checked and any template containing anything fields from
the group of - Length, Bitrate, Sam. Freq. or Ch. Mode.
NODNON <noddy phenomenon> = With “Advance mode” unchecked
Field selection set to - Title, Artist, Album, Year, Comment AND one or more from
the group Length, Bitrate, Sam. Freq. or Ch. Mode are checked
Then “Advance mode” checked and any template containing anything fields from
the group of - Length, Bitrate, Sam. Freq. or Ch. Mode.

When a DEFAULT list is created and the directory contains many files of many types, the created list correctly includes only MP3 files from the directory, except the any of the fields from the group (Length, Bitrate, Sam. Freq. or Ch. Mode) are blank.

However …

When a NODNON list is created and the directory contains many files of many types, the created list incorrectly includes all files in the directory, however fields from the group (Length, Bitrate, Sam. Freq. or Ch. Mode) are correctly reported for MP3 files. Of course all the template fields reported for non-MP3 files are invalid, errors or blank.

The “Errors and warning” pop-up dialog seems to report the same information for either list creation (File <filename> did not contain an ID3 tag.). However the “Status:” area at the bottom of the main window adds an additional line of information during the NODNON creation of an invalid file entry (Added chosen field(s) from file <filename> to list). But obviously a non-MP3 file contains NO chosen fields.

Don’t know if this is a blessing or a curse. In either case, hope this info helps?!

Thanks noddy and dasanco for the detailed information!

I might not be able to analyze this problem further for a few days, but I'll get right back here with my results as soon as I do, ok? Thanks again.

When I change names of directories, delete or create new directories while mp3ts is running, the browser tree in mp3ts is not always updated. Sometimes it is, sometimes not. this concerns beta 11.

The preview function in "Mass set Tags" doesn't work correctly...

I wanted to "mass-set" the field URL, but in the preview mode the field wasn't filled with my value, it was just empty.

I ran the mass-set function, though, and afterwards the field WAS filled indeed.

So only the preview-mode doesn't seem to work anymore in beta 11...

Cheers,
Michael

If I have the browser tree open and execute "Auto rename (from tags)" the program occassionally hangs (about 20% of the time). I have to end task on it. It seems as though it's still trying to rename the file, but it takes nearly 10-20 seconds to rename one file. After and end task & restart it operates normally & quickly. I don't recall if this hanging occured while using other tabs though.

This may possibly be related to the problem discussed in the following thread:

http://www.magnusbrading.com/cgi-bin....1;t=976

It does not necessarily have to do with the Explorer dir tree.

If anyone can send me an mp3 file that consistently reproduces any such problem, I'd be happy to take a look at it.

Does this problem ("Thread creation error"...) happen to anyone else reading this?

I've seen that error before, but not very often. I think I have something that may be related. Whenever I run MP3/TS on a large directory, previews are speedy as normal, but actual execution takes several minutes per file. (I'm not sure exactly how long, but it could be about 10 minutes or more, each.) It seems to relate to some "magic" number of files in the directory -- if I process files in a dir containing over 1500 entries, even if I only select a few files, each one takes long enough to go out for coffee.  :(

What makes it even more frustrating is the lack of any way to abort the process without ending the program's task and losing all my selections and settings. The only way I was able to work around this was to move the files I want to tweak into their own folder. I don't know of any good way to predict whether the problem will occur, either, except by checking the number of files. :p

I'd be willing to try that test build you mention in the other thread -- you can use the email address in my forum registration.

Hello,

I have found a problem when I used the "Autorename from Tags" with the following ouput file format :
<Artist><\><Album><\><TrackNr> - <Title>.mp3

If I run it several times, I end up with a structure like that :

Artist\Album\Artist\Album\Track Nr - Title.mp3.

Regards,

Marcel

Hi Marcel, that is not a bug. With that template you do actually tell Mp3/Tag Studio to create directories under the current directory, and then move the files into these directories.

Beta 12 is released, here's what's added/fixed:

* Added a context menu option for all status/warning/error boxes, enabling the user to save the contents to a chosen text file on disk.

* Fixed a bug that would under some conditions cause Mp3/Tag Studio to slow down or even crash with an error message ("Thread creation error...") when auto-renaming mp3 files. This bug was introduced in beta 10.

* Fixed the problems with manual refreshes of the Explorer dirtree.

* Fixed a bug that would under certain conditions cause the program to fail including certain mp3 info when creating custom lists.

* Fixed a bug that would under certain conditions attempt to extract mp3 encoding info from non-mp3 files when creating custom lists.

* Fixed a bug that caused the mass set tool not to display the changes in some ID3v2 fields in preview mode.

* Fixed a bug that under certain conditions caused ID3v2 comment frames with non-standard content descriptors to be removed when tagging files.

* Fixed a problem that caused the program not to switch working directory when the directory was selected from the Explorer dirtree by using the keyboard instead of the mouse.

* Fixed a bug that would cause the filter not to work properly if only filtering based on mp3 stereo mode was used.

Enjoy!

Beta 14 was just released (I skipped beta 13 for good luck ;)), here's what's added/fixed:

* Fixed a problem related to refreshing the Explorer dirtree, introduced in the beta 12 version that was released two days ago.

* Re-enabled the auto update feature of the Explorer dirtree.

Enjoy!

The browser tree keeps flickering every few seconds. My cursor changes to an hourglass symbol. I assume this is related to auto-refresh? The flickering is annoying.

Also, all folders are preceeded with a + (expansion) symbol, even though there's no subdirectory within. I prefer how the old directory tree used to work. I'm sure this is by design, although it's counter-intuitive.

Aaaaaarrrrrgggghhhhh!
No! What happened?
:)
Magnus, it appears that the "invert selection" from the context menu in the custom files box has gone.
Please, please bring it back (when you get a chance!;).
I love that feature.

I think you must have installed an older version by mistake. Just like cupon says, the invert selection feature is still there, and the ampersand in the advanced templates is nowhere to be found? Damn, you really scared me into believeing that I based beta 14 on an older code branch there for a moment, phew...

I have not seen the flickering myself, it might indicate that some program is periodically touching the files in your directories. But I can make the auto-update feature an option anyway, no problem.
About the plus signs, yeah, I noticed that too. The problem is that no Explorer tree component is perfect (why does that always keep happening in the rare cases I use components not designed by myself? ;)), so they all have some small disadvantage that it seems you have to live with. The last one I used had no possible way to manually refresh, so it had to go since this outweights the plus sign problem, but I do of course completely agree it's annoying. I'll do my best to fix it later anyway.

Geez, don't I feel like a googhead! :)
You know what happened?
I was up to date with the betas. I was running 13, and I installed 14 a day or 2 ago (whenever it was released), but shortly after that, I 'ghosted' my system back from an image that was about 3 months old... and it had beta 10, and it hadn't clicked with me.
So sorry for the scare, Magnus!
You're good.

Thanks for the info, I have sent the special build to you Llamatron. Please report your results back here.

Just checking back with an update, even though technically this wouldn't go in this topic. :)

The special build didn't do the trick, Magnus, but I see you've fixed the slowdown problem somewhere along the line since then. Good job!

Magnus, in the next beta could you please modify the function that needs to keep a lock on the working directory. I often want to move the folder that I've just been working on straight after making tag updates. Windows Explorer always gives an error because tag studio still has a lock on the folder until i explicitly move off it. It might be that you're holding the lock so that undo will work, but couldn't you change it so it still handles the exception that the folder is missing?

Titanium,
Just a heads up that Magnus is still on holidays. He'll be back in circulation around the 11th (2 more days or thereabouts), and I'm sure he'll respond to your request then.

Titanium, simply press the "up one level" button just to the right of the working directory box before moving the dir, and it will be fine, only one quick mouse click.

There are several problems involved with not locking the working dir like this, so I will most likely not change this at this point, but thanks for you input in any case.

And thanks noddy for holding the fort while I was away :praise:, now I'm back anyway, so you can relax again. :)

Hi All.  First off, gratuitous praise, I used MP3TS back about a year ago, (3.05 days) and while I liked it, I wasn't quite enamoured with it.

Comming back to Beta 14 it seems that maybe I just didn't spend enough time with it as it's gotten much more useful for me.

On to the report:
Running Win2k, updated to the latest everything from MS.  My MP3 directory is a mapped drive over a network.  It seems that MP3TS frequently "refreshes" the folder structure on me, which causes pauses in my input or changes.  But that's not a huge deal, I guess maybe its just the delay over the network (though its an almost totally unused 100baseT link through a single switch).  I do run i a fairly "low memory" situation (192Mb total) on a PIII 500mhz if that makes a difference.

The thing that does cause me trouble, and its not "simple" to repeat but I can have it happen fairly reliably is this.  All my mp3's are albums, and I maintain them in a folderstructure of <alphabetic letter> - <Artist> - <Album> - <Disc 1/2 etc>-<Songs>

When I change the album name (or I find it out for bootlegs) I want to change the Folder for the Album.  What I do is RightClick on the folder in the Treeview, and hit Properties.  Then I change the "Name" window and hit OK.  This works reliably enough.  However, if I rightclick on a folder, and when the menu comes up (open, explore, Send To, Cut, Copy, etc) I click on another part of the MP3TS studio window (essentially to dismiss the menu) the menu remains on the screen and MP3TS stops responding.  I can switch to any other apps, and they will work, but MP3TS will have around 70% of my CPU and will neither dismiss the context menu, or return to being responsive.

I thought maybe it was trying to "process something" so I went into task manager and gave it "HIGH" priority, but it would simply grab 99% of the CPU but even after 20 minutes wouldn't dismiss the menu or return to normal function.  I then Force quit MP3TS and it went away along with that menu.

I can fairly reliably reproduce this problem.  At first I thought maybe the two things were related (i.e. the refresh over the network was happening just as I brought up the context menu and the two got confused or something) but I cant be certain that it is happening at the same time.

Great App.  Thanks for all your work.

(Can ya tell that I do Tech Support for a living?)

Morganti, I have tried with several folders, and also with clicking on several parts of the Mp3/Tag Studio main window to dismiss the menu once it's there, but your problem is never successfully reproduced for me.  :ashamed: Do you have any further details that can more reliably reproduce it you think?

Also, does this happen for anyone else? Noddy?

Theoretically, it could be due to a broken third-party Explorer shell-extension in your computer.

I'm using Beta 14 under WinXP SP2. Windows doesn' shutdown if mp3ts is running. If I give Windows the shutdown command it starts closing all running applications. This process stops at mp3ts. I have to close it manually and then give windows the shutdown command again. I hope anyone can reproduce this.

Beta 15 was just released, here's what's added/fixed:

* Made the auto refresh of the Explorer browse tree optional.

* Fixed a problem with the Explorer browse tree, that made it display expansion icons (plus signs) also for folders that did not contain any subfolders.

* Fixed a problem with the Explorer browse tree, that made it expand or collapse the currently selected folder if it was refreshed.

* Fixed a problem with the Explorer browse tree, that made it flicker when the update button (F5) was pressed while it was selected in the GUI.

* Fixed a problem that under certain conditions could prevent some files from being processed correctly by the Direct Rename tool when the output template contained folder levels.

Enjoy!
