If you want a simple central place to report any bugs you may find in the 3.5 beta versions, you are welcome to put them all in this thread. If you like it better to put them in separate threads though, that's just fine too, I still read them all. ;)

Thanks!

I will be unavailable now until Tuesday, in case you wonder why I'm not responding to any posts, but please keep the bug reports coming anyway, I will read and answer them as soon as I get back.

Thanks!

Possible bug ! in Mp3TagStudio 3.5 b4

in the Auto Tag (from filename) tab:
if you untick all the boxes and erase everything from the "Field Separator Sequence.
You still have displayed:

<\><\>.mp3

(in red) Which you cannot delete,
this didn't exist in my Previous Version.

When individual files are selected in the custom file selection, they get reset to all unchecked when clicking thru the tabs.

Request a shortcut to move up or down in the mp3 list when in the 'Browse/Edit tags & flags' when edititing the individual tag. (e.g., ctrl+up arrow or ctrl+down arrow will go to the previous/next mp3).

Ivan:

Does this happen every time, or just when processing certain files or performing certain operations? I cannot seem to reproduce it, so you are very welcome to provide more info to make me able to do this so I can fix it. Thanks!

This is the same behavior as earlier versions. All it means is that you used the "Add dir" button to add these directory markers in the previous template, and you can remove them easily by selecting them in the "Order" listbox to the right, and then pressing the "Del dir" button (or switching to advanced mode and simply deleting them directly in the template edit box). Thanks for the report anyway!

ladiko:

The Windows XP SP2 problems are not fully fixed yet. As mentioned before, these problems are not in my own code, but in the code of the protections wrapper software "Asprotect", but I'm doing my best working with the author of that software to help him fix them. Hopefully it will work fine at the time this Windows service pack is released to the general public.

1.
Exactly what tabs/controls are you clicking to get the files in the custom files selection listbox unchecked? I cannot reproduce this? Please give a detailed example. Also, please make sure to make a difference between "unchecked" (meaning that the checkmarks in the checkboxes of the file entries in the list disappear) and "unselected" (meaning that the file entries lose focus, but still have their checkbox selected). It is only "unchecked" that matters.

2.
About the hotkeys, did you ever try alt+up/alt+down (or any of the other hotkeys documented in the manual ;))?

@mb:
i've played a little bit with the trial version of asprotect - added trial-screens to a programm and so on. and this programm runs 1 of 4 times i've started it. so i understand that the problem is caused by asprotect and not by your work.
on saturday i'm goin to buy an external hd for my notebook (my only pc). and then i install an aditional xp.sp1 -only to run mp3ts :p

Hehe, sounds good ladiko, I'm glad to hear you like it that much. :) And just so you know, the registered versions of Asprotect are much more complex than the trial version, and hence have even more problems with SP2. I think Alexey (the author of Asprotect) will fix it though, he's a good guy. Thanks for hanging in there anyway.

Sure, here is a quote directly from the help file, including an example:

<\>
This is the directory field. It is used to show that information is to be parsed out from the names of the parent directories of the current directory.

A little example for this one:
If you have the following file:

C:\mp3\Britney Spears\Crazy (CD Single)\01 - Crazy (Stop! mix).mp3

and the following parsing template:

<Artist><\><Album><\><TrackNr> - <Title>.mp3

the following field assignment will be made:

Artist = "Britney Spears"
Album = "Crazy (CD Single)"
TrackNr = "01"
Title = "Crazy (Stop! mix)"

This is not new, but it seems that mp3ts may not correctly analyze the vbr header, or at least it is not consistent with some other popular tools.

An mp3 which is produced by LAME (3.90/3.96) --alt-preset standard shows a red file length and frame count in mp3ts, indicating some error in the VBR header. If I "repair" the VBR header using mp3ts 3.5b4, then these values now show as black. If I then open the file with mp3trim PRO 1.90 and save it, they show as red again.

Magnus, I am emailing you 3 small sample files to demonstrate this, in case it is helpful.

Thanks for the report and the sample files, I've analyzed them and this is the source of the problem:

LAME does not count the VBR header frame itself into the total framecount of the file, but Mp3/Tag Studio and mp3trim do.

LAME does not include the size of the ID3v1 and ID3v2 tags in the its filesize count, mp3trim only includes the size of the ID3v1 tag, but not the ID3v2 tag (does not make sense), and Mp3/Tag Studio includes them both.

The bigger problem is that these VBR headers do not have a good official specification, so it's impossible to say who's right and who's not (except that the mp3trim size calculation really doesn't make sense). I have patched Mp3/Tag Studio to accept all these three variations as valid VBR headers now anyway (will be available in the next beta), but I will continue to create the VBR headers in the way I currently do, since there is no telling which is more right.

OK, here his another one, which I emailed to you but I think you would like me to document it here so that others may see and know it was reported.

I have found some files which I cannot set the flags on the whole file. It seems that these are otherwise valid MP3 files (not corrupted). On some files, the feature works fine, on others it does not.  In batch mode it just says it failed, in single mode the message is "Warning: Unable to find a first valid frame header, aborting!"

In your response to me you said this is fixed in the next beta. Thanks!

With zero-pad track numbers set to 2, seems like a track number such as 3/7 should come out as 03-07 when auto renaming from tags. Currently, I get 03-7 which doesn't look right.

Just tried macros. Very nice!

And I'm glad you like the macros, I do too. ;)

Filter Issue:

I set a filter that only has Filter Flags and CRC checked. It works as expected on the  "Search" tab. If I set CRC Yes, some files get selected. If I set CRC No, all of the other files get selected.

Everywhere else ("Create custom lists", "Mass set tags/flags", "Mass cleanup tags", "Auto rename from tags", etc.) it doesn't seem to work. Whether I set it to CRC Yes or CRC No, none of the mp3's pass the filter.

Filter Issue: update

I just ran a test on a larger batch of mp3's. It turns out that the filter does pick up a FEW mp3's.

Here is my results run against 6149 mp3's.

Search Tab, Filter = CRC YES, 77 hits
Search Tab, Filter = CRC NO, 6077 hits

Create Custom Lists Tab, Filter = CRC YES, 0 hits
Create Custom Lists Tab, Filter = CRC NO, 43 hits

Could you please send me a sample of one of the mp3 files that get caught in the filter with crc=yes when running the search tool but not when running the list tool, and another file that has the same effect when crc=no in the filter, just like you describe? That would make it much easier for me to find and fix the problem anyway. Thanks!

Thanks for the sample files, I have fixed this issue now (available in next beta). Btw, this problem was not present in versions prior to 3.5, it was a biproduct bug of the macro features.

I know, I have already tried that one, and it didn't work. :( But I just made a new test for you, with an even newer version, please try it and see if it works any better:

http://www.magnusbrading.com/ftp/mp3tsb6_xp_sp2_test_patch.zip

Note that you MUST use the real official installpack/upgrade for Mp3/TS beta 6 first, and then copy this patch over it!

Substring Replacement Discrepancy in 3.5b5:

I have my casing set to Advanced. Where to apply includes the Title field. The words "a" and "in" are included in the always lower-case list.

I have a substring replacement rule like this:

replace substring "in a major"
with substring "in A Major"
case sensitive NO
apply AFTER CASEFIX
only whole word NO

This works as expected when editing tags in Browse/Edit with continuous casefix turned on. For instance, if I type a title like "concerto in a major" it becomes "Concerto in A Major". But if I run Direct Tag Manipulation <Title> to <Title> with case fix and replace ON, it changes to "Concerto in a Major".

So I finally got around to installing the beta version. I appear to have several sets of mp3's that consistently cause access violations when I choose their directory. Does not require that I examine any individual file, nor does it require that the explorer tree be utilized. If MP3TS is closed while such a directory is chosen, the next MP3TS startup will have an "error reading main datafile..." message.

I'll send you some examples tomorrow if you like, Magnus. Come on, I know you like getting to wade through piles of random, spurious wierd files!

tailwaggers,
Thanks, I just fixed it, please confirm that it works in the next beta (you will need to recreate any macros created in beta 5 which had the casefix option active during macro recording).

Disposable Hero,
Thanks for the report. Exactly what do you mean by "when I choose their directory"? I wonder this especially since you also say "If MP3TS is closed while such a directory is chosen..."? Are you referring to when you view such a directory in the normal Windows Explorer, which would in that case indicate the shell extension as the source of the problem? Please give more specific details about exactly in which situations that any crash occurs, and in exactly which programs it may occur (Mp3/Tag Studio or Windows Explorer?). Looking forward to the sample files. :)

Whole File Flag Update Problem:

In general, updating flags on the whole file seems to be working well now. I have one file in which the flags do not seem to update correctly. I am sending you the sample by email.

mp3Trim PRO has a feature to detect if there are any flag inconsistencies throughout the file. On the sample file, whenever I have it set (using mp3ts) to its original flag setttings (private=YES, copyright=NO, original=NO), no inconsistencies are reported. If I use mp3ts to reverse the flags in the whole file, all three flags report inconsistencies, however no error or warning is reported within mp3ts and the browse view seems to indicate the flags were changed. This is true whether I set the flags using Browse/Edit or Mass Set Tags/Flags.

I do not see this behavior with most other mp3 files.

I don't THINK the file is corrupted, at least not as reported using my current set of tools. It is also possible that this is a bug in mp3Trim PRO, and it is just misreporting the inconsistencies. Please let me know if you think that is the case.

Magnus,
"As soon as I choose the directory": if using the explorer browse tree, immediately after clicking on a directory containing problematic files. If the browse tree is not enabled, immediately after clicking OK in the Choose Directory popup, having selected a directory containing problematic files. These are the circumstances for generation of the access violation.

MP3TS does not exit or lock up, it just produces the access violation popup. I can click OK in the resulting popup and continue browsing within MP3TS.

Access violation popup titlebar displays:
Mp3/Tag Studio 3.5 (beta 5)

Access violation popup message displays:
Access violation at 0048C5F9 in module 'mp3tag_s.exe'. Read of address 00000010

The values are always the same in the popup. Reproducable without exception, across multiple computer restarts. WinXP SP1, 2 gigs of ram, 10's of gigs of free disk space, etc.

I haven't used the shell extension, this is all solely within MP3TS. If I exit MP3TS while one of the folders containing problematic files is still the working directory, the main datafile error will be displayed the next time that MP3TS is launched.

I refer to "problematic files" because there are no special or distinguishing attributes to the folders. I've copied several of the folders to different locations on the same drive and then put different mp3's in them. Choosing these new directories as the working folder for MP3TS does not generate any error.

Thanks for the sample files both of you, I will analyze them.

tailwaggers, I took a quick glance and noticed that your sample file contained unsynced binary data (jpeg cover art). This might confuse some analyzers, please try to remove the entire ID3v2 tag from that file (with Mp3/Tag Studio) and see if mp3Trim reacts any differently to it then (also try to set the flags again in Mp3/Tag Studio if mp3Trim still says it has inconsistent flags, and then see what it says after that).

Hehe, this is funny, the sample file that tailwaggers sent me triggered the exact same crash that Disposable Hero reported after I had played around with it some, and indeed, it was the bug that Disposable Hero was referring to (but it had nothing to do with the problem in tailwaggers' original report). :) It turns out this bug was introduced in beta 5, and it quite serious, i.e. it causes crashes for many different mp3 files, mainly files that only has an ID3v1 tag but no ID3v2 tag, but it could happen to other files too (don't worry, no risk for damage, just the annoying crash that Disposable Hero reported).

It is fixed now anyway, and all will be fine in beta 6, thanks guys! :)

Ok, beta 6 is officially released, here's what's added/fixed:

* Added macro support to the shell extension (Windows Explorer right-click menu).

* Made a fix to the "Only whole word" feature of the casefix tool, so that it now also supports phrases containing more than one word (it is now called "Only whole word/phrase").

* Fixed a bug related to the custom replacements casefix feature, introduced in beta 5.

* Fixed a bug (introduced in beta 5) that sometimes caused crashes when analyzing mp3 files in e.g. the browse tool.

Enjoy!

Sweet. Issue fixed with beta 6. Thanks Magnus!

Might be important to note: the shell extension may need to be disabled in File > Settings before it can be replaced when using the update patch (not the full install).

I followed the procedure of completely removing the ID3v2 tag but see no difference. It appears that mp3ts 3.5b6 is silently failing to set the flag through the whole file.

I confirmed that it is a problem with mp3ts by locating another little utility that just sets mp3 flags. When I change the flags for the whole file with that utiility, no discrepancy is reported by mp3trim PRO.

Strange about the shell extension, it should suffice to only start Mp3/Tag Studio once to install the new shell extension. You might have to close all Windows Explorer windows before doing this though, or the upgrade of the shell extension may fail (because Windows Explorer may lock up the dll file that is to be upgraded), but in that case it should happen the next time Mp3/Tag Studio is started (and there are no Windows Explorer windows locking up the file) instead.

Hmm, on second thought, since I don't have mp3Trim to validate my results myself, could you please send a copy of the same sample file you sent before, but this time being fixed with this tool (with the same flags set as the last one) and validated in mp3Trim? That would make things a lot easier anyway, thanks!

Now that I think about it, the shell extension replacement issue is probably rare. I run explorer in multiple processes, this is probably why the extension does not get 'released' on my system.
