When preview mode shows you what the program will do, it would be handy to be able to edit anything that's wrong right then and there without having to close the preview, go back in, change the settings, re-preview, then hopefully accept. This would make it a lot more likely that one could standardize an mp3 library in one stroke. Just for the record, doing it the 'preview, close, preview again' method, it took me about 10 hours to re-tag and re-name ~4,000 mp3's.

For manual single-editing of differently formatted tags/filenames, you should use the browse tool. The other tools are for use with files having the same format for filenames.

If I understand it right, Magnus, he's talking about making changes to the pattern that affects all the files in the preview...

Llama is partially correct. But the ability to directly click and edit in the preview mode (a la iTunes) would've literally saved me hours. The ability to do so on a mass scale as Llama suggests would be even better.

But this is exactly what will happen if you just click away the preview screen, change the pattern and press the execute button again?

The problems is, it's not always the pattern that needs correcting. Sometimes one file might have a problem in one part of the tag, and another file will have a problem in another part, and another file will have a problem in yet another part . . .

The only solution there is manual editing. And as long as I have to edit manually, shouldn't I be able to do it in the fewest steps possible?

Here, see for yourself:

1. Press Execute with Preview
2. Notice 1 or 2 mistakes
3. Close preview
4. Navigate to Browse/Edit Tags
5. Click on first file, type in change, save change.
6. Click on second file, type in change, save change.
7. Press Execute with Preview
8. Press 'Looks Good'

-OR-

1. Press Execute with Preview
2. Notice 1 or 2 mistakes
3. Change it right in preview
4. Press 'Looks Good'

It effectively cuts the process in half!

Well, the main thing is that the mass processing tools are for mass processing, and the browse/edit tool is for single editing, so mixing them up might get a little confusing. A spreadsheet-based interface for the browse tool has been suggested before though, which would be exactly the same thing as what you're suggesting, and that might be implemented in a future update.

By the way, are you sure that the descriptions of the number of steps in your examples above aren't just a little bit biased? ;) For example, how come you have to click on the single files in the browse tool as a separate step, but not click on the different rows in the preview screen? :)

That works if you can remember all the ones that need attention.  :p

sound to be a cool idea. In the preview the tags are changed directly and with that changings the EXE will be done!

Alternatively Magnus, how about a checkbox beside every line in the preview window, so the user could "mark" certain files which need further attention.
Then, as a further option, have a "Move marked files to..." with a browse button, allowing the user to put those files requiring further attention into a holding zone (i.e. temp folder) for later (manual) adjustment.
And finally, one further option... a choice of 2 radio buttons to either:
1. Execute as planned, then move marked files, or
2. Move marked files, then execture remaining files.
end
