An option to automatically remove spaces from around dashes when autotagging from filename would save having to go to custom mode just to remove some spaces when the filenames are named <artist>-<track>-<title> or something similar.

Couldn't you set up one or more presets to do this for you? Do the Advanced mode thing once, then click the + symbol to the right of the "Expected file name format" text field. Now it's a preset you can select from the dropdown. Please explain further if I did not answer your question.

There already is such a feature implemented ("Trim leading/trailing spaces" in the case-fix utility), but I recommend using exact templates as much as possible anyway, to prevent mistakes. If you save your most common templates in the drop-down boxes, just like Disposable Hero suggests, it will be very fast and easy to switch to the correct template anyway.

I could do this except I'd have to add one for each and every possible combination for both with a space dash space and with just a dash.  Also this would mean one extra mouse movement in each operation.

Ok, just use the feature mentioned above then.

PS.
I think you should fire the guy who names your mp3:s originally. ;)
