Follow up: I took a freshly made --alt-preset standard MP3 and made a few copies of it and started tagging & gaining, and gaining & tagging just to see what differences there might be. Any comments are welcome.
The fresh MP3 had 8372 frames, and size was 5,438,846 bytes.
Tagging first, there were now 8373 frames, and file size increased to 5,443,362 bytes. VBR header repair was also needed and applied.
MP3Gain performed, still 8373 frames, file size increased 206 bytes to 5,440,568 bytes. Again VBR header repair was needed and applied, and final file size and frames remained the same.
I then took another copy of the MP3 and tagged first and applied MP3Gain again, but this time only did one VBR header repair at the end after MP3Gaining. Final frames and file size the same.
=========================================================== Sorry, I'm not sure if all this is even of any value so I'm trying to keep it short. ===========================================================
I then took another fresh copy and performed both processes again, but MP3Gained first this time. Results were the same as in the first example: After MP3Gain it needed and received VBR header repair, and needed it again after tagging. Finally, I took a fourth copy and MP3Gained and tagged but only did one VBR header repair at the end. Frames and final file size was the same as in the first experiment - 8373 and 5,440,568.
Listening to the files, they all sounded identical. If anyone has any comments about the whole thing please feel free to add them.
