I've got a extensive collection of mp3s and many of them are saved without tags and with a playlist attached to be able to play the mp3s in the original album order. I'd like to autotag those mp3s so..., would it be possible to add a function to MP3 TAG STUDIO that would allow it to add the <track> information to the tags based on the order in the playlist?

If the track number is included either in the filenames or in the playlist contents, this is possible. Otherwise it is sadly not possible right now.

No, the track number information is not avaible. It can only be gathered from the the position in the playlists. Well it doesn't matter! I can do it manually although it'll take a bit longer.Congratulations in any case for your program. It is the best in what it does

I was trying to find a way to prepend the numbers 1, 2, 3, etc. to the Track number to represent the album in a multiple CD set. So I used your "list" suggestion as a work around.
How about adding an option under "Mass set tags/flags" to be able to append/prepend the "Track" field? All the other tag edits on that tab have this option except for "Track".

Hi SpenceRus, this is because the track number field can only be a number (i.e. according to the ID3 specification), so prepend/append operations would in practically every case be illegal anyway.

Hi,
Here's how i do it: using xplorer2 (nice little double pane win. expl. replacement) i look up the folder where my tracks (file names) are and then use the terrific feature 'mass rename', which has many options, one of them is to add a number and leave the rest of the file name unaltered. Now you have your 'track numbers', which you can tag using the 'auto tag from file names' feature in MP3TS! Good luck, adriaan (NL)

One of the all time great programs, comperable to Mp3/Tag Studio. I tried to convince the mighty Magnus that the two programs should borrow some features from each other.

If you're willing to consider another tool for track numbering, I'll suggest Michael Pleumper's ID3-TagIT (www.id3-tagit.de).
It has a very useful autonumber function which will enable you to select any number of tracks, set the starting track number, and it will write sequential track numbers into the ID3V1 and V2 Track Number field. (It will create track numbers of any digit width. So 1, 01, 001, are all possible.)
The end result is the same as Magnus' approach, but it is done directly within the tool (and not using an external list) so it's fairly straightforward to accomplish.
