Saving every possible case as a macros requires forsight (and an ever growing set of quickly non-mnumonic names). It would be a great help if each of the template-building slots retained a push-down stack of the last n (for not too large a value of n) templates, with any that is reused being promoted back to the top of the stack. (seeing that you only mentioned "saving the as macros") I've found that it's enought to save a handful of these, and it will cover all your needs, or at least with just slight modifications.
