I reason like this: If you are to write something on the keyboard anyway, pressing the tab key once first is practically no extra work. Alternatively, if you click that checkbox with your mouse, moving the cursor an inch to the right and clicking again isn't any mentionable trouble either.
On the other hand, automatically shifting focus upon clicking those checkboxes might be confusing to some people, since it is not standard Windows GUI behavior, and especially for people who don't want to write in the edit box immediately after clicking the checkbox (if they e.g. first want to set up which fields to use, and then enter the data in all of them, which is the method I most often use).
But I'll think about it again and see what I come up with.
