i was wondering if it were at all existant that a program would take the name of the file and break it down into say "Artist - Title.mp3"  or whatever.  Using that existing name it would retrieve the rest of your desired information from CDDB or any other database.  My issue is that i used to rip cd's using only the data for the "artist - title.mp3" and now i want the more complete tag information like "artist - album - track# - title.mp3"   DOES IT EXIST?! or can we make it happen?  I know dupe posts arent liked but i am going to put this elsewhere cause its important.

If you search this board for "CDDB" you might find some more or less interesting info regarding that.

I asked a similar question in my "mp3 tags" topic followup.
All of the CDBB/freeDB type services that I heard of are
"CD based" and unfortunately NOT "Track based". If you find
one that's "Track based" let me know. I will be very happy.

This illustrates the point I was making about how valuable the "ID Tags" are in general. Once you've compiled them,
don't loose them, whatever you do.
I now maintain my tags separately as text lists. I use "mp3TS" + any text editor to make the lists and I can always update
my tags from the list using the wonderful "tag from list" tool.

Hi,
I tried "The GodFather" (h**p://users.otenet.gr/~jtcliper/tgf/) that is able to ask 'freeDB.org' and 'allmusic.com' for a search. Finding some albums your are able to select the values for Artist/Album/Tittles and select it to your MP3 File.

I think this would be a great feature for mp3TagStudio 4.0, till than I have to open additional the Browser to get this values.

Have Fun

I think your answer may be ID3-TagIT v3.3.0 or later.

It has a freeDB tagger.  Tt is only really useful for a single album at a time and searches can take awhile which is understandable.  However, searches cannot be prematurely stopped so you have to wait.  The search feature allows you to enter your own keywords also.  Unfortunately, the searcher doesn't auto-use filled in id3 tags such as album and artist.

Probably from all the negatives I've given, it may not sound too useful.  However, once you get a match, then you can easily re-order your files to match the expected new names and then auto-tag them.

Guys,

Foobar2000 can do this easy. But you need the entire album of mp3s. All you do is open foobar, Drag all your album folders into the foobar window. Select all. And select Mass Album lookup from the right click menu under freedb thing. The best part is foobar then can easily rename the files too. Its super fast, does more than one album at once, and doesn't prompt you until it looks up all the albums. (meaning you don't have to babysit the thing). It's awesome. The files don't even have to be named. All the lookups I've done are in folders called cd1, cd2, etc. And they are named Tack 1, etc. So I don't even know how it works.

I'm now just looking for something that can look up single mp3s.
end
