Topic: File Name, Sorting / Rename, I need this desperately, 40000+ files< Next Oldest | Next Newest >

Here is my situation, besides having a severly large amount of unsorted files, I also have multiples of the same file.

As is, I am doing all this manually... and i am seriously concidering the thought of programming my own tool specifically for this.

Example... list of songs..
Madonna - Like a virgin.mp3
Madona - Like a virgin.mp3
Madona & Paul Simon - Living a dream (Radio).mp3
Madona & Paul Simon - Living a dream & Forever and a day (Radio)

What I want as a final result is this...

Madonna
- Like a virgin

Madona
- Like a virgin
- Living a dream (Radio)
- Living a dream (Radio, With Paul Simon) AKA...
- Forever and a day (Radio, With Paul Simon) AKA...

Paul Simon
- Living a dream (Raido, With Madona) AKA...
- Forever and a day (Radio, With Madona) AKA...

Those are only four files that I want to show as seven files, with thier variations... This format
Artist1 & Artist2 & Artist3 - SongName1 & SongName2 & Songname3 (VersionNotes).mp3

The AKA... would be a link that opens a window with the original file name, and its variations.

The & in the ARTIST area would be a GROUP seporator for each individual artist... with other artists being displayed in the (VersionNotes) area when displayed for editing/playing.

The - is the standard seporator... for simplicity, the ALBUM info is redundantly stupid and a waste of space... because Madonna didn't have....
Madonna - Faithful - Like a virgin.mp3
and
Madonna - Devotion - Like a virgin.mp3
Artists don't reuse song names... or rarely...
and to tell you the truth... people barely remember the artist and song name... even less remember the album, and even less care... ANY-WAY...

The seporator is followed by the song name, and AKA songnames... EG.. Real name first... if it is known, and then the common name that others REMEMBER or THINK is the song name... (I am way guilty of this...)

The ( and ) are useless groups of data... only used for sorting... these would apear on the bottom of the songlists, because they are obviously some form of edit, or variation... (Live), (Radio), (Bootleg), (Bad Copy), (High Quality), etc...

When displayed, the additional artists will apear in this area with the VariationNotes... as some artists have SOLO songs that get remade as DUETS, or FEAT. multiple artists... most are not worth mentioning... but I may know paul simon better then madonna, and know that song by him, with her... or vice versa...

As it stands... I make a copy of each song that has variations, and resort them manually... I would mutch rather have One file and a program that sees all variations, or a program that makes all the variations for me, with out the long hours of renaming.... I have planty of space... I just need my low quality files dumped, and my doubles like madona and madonna fixed... sonetimes, in the case of (Wierd Al) and (Weird Al) the files can be thousands of files apart...with others inbetween. (if you can't see, the I and E are swapped, common issue)

z u r p @ c o x . n e t
(Anitspam varsion of my E-Mail... don't use spaces)

As far as I can see, the biggest problem for you is to sort out all the possible spelling mistakes (and other incorrect information) in the tags. This is extremely hard to do automatically with a program, since the program can never know what is correct information or not, so you probably have to do it manually. But once the songs are tagged correctly, Mp3/Tag Studio can do pretty much anything with them, including sorting the into directories, renaming them in lots of different ways, and all such things.

Some of your wishes seem to be a little too specific to fit into a generic tool as Mp3/TS though.
