could reply to you reply (without registering).

Would love to send you samples (whole songs only, unless you know a way to cut the beginning of an MP3 file). Where do you want it delivered ?? (Email, FTP) ??

BTW, it sounds a bit like the repair process cut's off a few milliseconds of the song data. The only files where I found this to be the case start without a pause at the beginning.

So far, I hear the spike with MM 8.0 only. Have not tried elsewhere. May MM expects the header you are repairing.

So where do you want both files ??

The vbr repair should not cut off any sound data whatsoever.

I have now analyzed the mp3 files you sent me, and there is no problem at all playing them in Winamp, they both sound identical, without any spikes.

I think I know why some players (like e.g. MM) might have problems with it though. The original file already contained a VBR header of a less common kind (VBRI). When another VBR header (of the more common kind, XING) is added in front of it by Mp3/Tag Studio, it might confuse some players, and they probably try to decode the second VBRI header directly to audio, instead of interpreting its data.

To avoid this, you could cut off the first one hundredth of a second or so of the song with the Mp3/Tag Studio trim tool before performing the VBR repair on it, that should remove the VBRI header.

(or use a less retarded player.. MusicMatch has never been any good.. way back when they were touting their VBR encoder as something really good, it wasnt actually writing VBR headers to the files, so players were ending up trying to understand how to draw seeking bars for mp3s that went from 4000 minutes to 7 and a half when played)..

always distrust any software that rises in version so massively.. its normally a tactic to put out substandard software but make users think it is better than everyone elses.. for example, AOL 8, AOL 7, AOL 6, Windows Media Player 9, WMP 8, WMP 7, IE 6, IE 5.5..

NONE of these products have ever seen "real" version numbers like 7.1 7.2 7.3 7.35... its just a case of:

Microsoft releases WMP 9 (which must be so much better than 8 cos it went up a whole version number, right? wrong)
So all the other wannabe companies 0get together whatever half- working junk they have at the time (i.e. MM 8.0 ) and cob it out on the net in a vain hope to makle themselves competitive..

Winamp's never botherd with that silly practice (hence version 2.81..).. real programmers! :)
