I have now analyzed the mp3 files you sent me, and there is no problem at all playing them in Winamp, they both sound identical, without any spikes.
I think I know why some players (like e.g. MM) might have problems with it though. The original file already contained a VBR header of a less common kind (VBRI). When another VBR header (of the more common kind, XING) is added in front of it by Mp3/Tag Studio, it might confuse some players, and they probably try to decode the second VBRI header directly to audio, instead of interpreting its data.
To avoid this, you could cut off the first one hundredth of a second or so of the song with the Mp3/Tag Studio trim tool before performing the VBR repair on it, that should remove the VBRI header.
