Topic: Strange renaming issue due to Nero, tranferring misnamed mp3's from CD to HD< Next Oldest | Next Newest >

I backed up my hard drive, thankfully, just before a recent crash.  For some reason, Nero chose to ignore the file names on some of my MP3's.  

For instance, instead of

Keiko Matsui - Cherry Blossom - 04 - Crescendo.mp3

the file on the CD simply reads

KEIKO_MATSUI_-_CHERRY_BLOSSOM

All of the songs on this album are the exact same name now.  Is there anything I can do to get them on my hard drive besides copy one song, use MP3/Tagger to rename it, then copy another song, and repeat?  This could take days!

The files should not be able to have the same names in the same directory, even if they are located on a CD, something must be very wrong with that CD. If this really is the case, it would be very hard for any program to process them, since this program would at some point need to pass on the filename into a Windows API function to access the file in question, and if several filenames are equal, the operating system couldn't in any way know which file the program is referring to. :( If this wouldn't be the case though, and if the files weren't on a read-only media, you could have used Mp3/Tag Studio in absolute path mode to perform such an automatic rename/move on all the files anyway.

I was afraid of that.  The files all play just fine on WinAmp (it picks up the filenames from the tags, of course).  I have no idea how they're named the same, or how the computer is able to read them, it's really, really weird.

Oh, well.  I'll be up all night, anyway, may as well do something with my time.  Thanks anyway, Magnus!

I'll probably do a quickie rename, then use mp3/tagger to do a full job and redirect them, etc.  I've been playing with that, totally cool function, being able to create directories.

You could try Flexible Renamer. It lets you copy and rename from ID3, and recurses subdirectories. I don't know that it would work in this instance, just that it exists and I've had no problems when using it.

If the identical naming issue keeps this from working, it also has a tool to mass-generate empty subfolders with numbering. That might at least aid in the process of transferring files from the CD to the HD without a bunch of naming conflicts. Dump each track into a dir, turn off the read-only attribute for the files (do it for all files by manipulating the proerties of the topmost folder and apply to all subfolders and files), then run a move/rename from tags with recursive subdirectories. See, easy! ;)

Read-only attributes are not a problem for Mp3/TS, just so you know. :)
