I often create a list-file to tweak tag values or filenames.  When this is to be applied to sub-directories the relative filename must be included, but frequently this contains some of the same sub-strings which I wish to change in the tag fields of the list.

The editor I use (EditPad) does not allow me to divide the file vertically and limit changes to one half or the other, so making such changes is rather tedious.

Would there be any way to have the filenames in one file and the tag/new-filenames in a second, parallel, file?  The names could be linked (xxx-1.txt, xxx-2.txt, or some such scheme) and the tag/rename from list process could run down them in sync.

Otherwise, can you suggest an editor or utility which can split a file vertically and then reassemble the modified parts?

It is often possible to use clever tricks when exporting the tag data to the list files, in order to be able to perform selective search and replace operations. Please give an example of the format of the lines you export to these list files, and the format you use to import data from them, and I'll see what I can do.

I don't have one, off-hand, but when the next case rears its ugly head I'll send it along.  We'll be travelling for the next couple of months, so I may not be doing much with tagging, but who knows, there is always Starbucks.

Hehe, ok. Well have a nice trip then, and welcome back to the messageboard when you get back home, if not earlier. :)
