You have no idea how happy you have made me in posting this!
Let me give the landscape:
I have a collection of mp3 files that spans over 50 genres, literally thousands of artists, and the entire collection is about 2.5 terabytes. I keep a very well-organized collection, it's arranged as genre/artist/year - album/ as in the beginning this was the only way to keep my album organized.
For a very long time I would play songs from my collection as one-offs (browsing to the song) or through playlists. I didn't have any music management software at all (and didn't really believe in it).
Anyways, I recently decided to make my collection mobile. I built a mini-itx computer with an array of hard drives, and a wireless card that automatically keeps the collection synced with that on my main fileserver in my home. I found a web-based front-end called Jinzora that manages my collection rather nicely, but unfortunately this is where the problems come in:
Most of my collection (about 70%) included unicode tags. This never was a problem before now, but Jinzora sadly, is incompatable with unicode tags, so I had a real problem. For weeks I've used a combination of mp3 tag studio and another program to convert my tags back to ascii and include album art, lyrics and album/artist "liner notes". I've struggled with weeks to get the unicode stripped out, and have had nothing but frustration and headache.
That is, until I saw this post. I immediately gave it a shot, set it to sweep all the basic tags: genre, artist, name, and comments. It took about 15 minutes to sweep the entire collection. Then with great anticipation, I truncated my database, and re-read the collection. WOW! The problem has been fixed. and not just fixed, but fixed perfectly.
I'm registering MP3 Tag Studio right now. The software, for me, is worth every blessed penny.
