Any hints?

This has been reported by some users before, but I cannot seem to reproduce it. :( Please submit any information you might have about how to reprodude this problem, and I will do my best to find and fix it.

For example, usage of which tools in Mp3/Tag Studio results in this error message? Which tools do not? How many processed files does it take before it happens?

I've been encountering this problem as well.  Combined with this issue I've had some rename / retag operations that take an unusually long time (2 - 15 sec vs the usual fraction of a second) per file / operation.  When this is happening the program is using more or less 100% CPU and creating a LOT of threads which are not being terminated (thread count for the program generally climbs up to ~1800 before it gives the error and becomes unrecoverable).  In fact since noticing this I've observed that even when I'm not getting the slowdown issue the number of threads used by the program often climbs by a few threads per operation and never goes back down.  Sometimes it just sits there after starting a rename batch and just counts up threads without completing a single operation.

I have not been able to isolate any particular tags or files that cause this, when it happens during tagging of a particular folder i can terminate the program, open it up and perform the exact same operation on that folder usually with no problem or delay.

Potentially applicable details:

My system is an athlon64 3000+, 1gb ram running XP Pro SP2.  Background apps I could see potentially interfering include Nod32 Antivirus and Tiny Personal Firewall Pro.

Great app so far though, only problem I've got :)

Thanks for the information!

This is extremely strange, since Mp3/Tag Studio isn't even multithreaded at all to begin with!?

My guess is that it is either the kind of possibly interfering software that you mention, OR that it is the software protection wrapper program that I use that causes this mess. :(

I will continue to look into this. Any further info from any user whatsoever would be very welcome.

I also posted about this in the bigger Beta 11 thread. I've experienced this frequently, but only when the "Use explorer browser tree" option is enabled.

BTW, when the tree was open I did move/delete some folders within xplorer2's windows explorer interface. Perhaps mp3 tag studio is bothered by another program deleting folders while it's still visible within the tree.

I've also noticed that the deleted folders aren't actually removed from view within xplorer2's interface while mp3 tag studio is open. Selecting those folders and pressing delete results in an access violation, even though mp3 tag studio doesn't have it set as the "Working directory." The folders disappear once I close mp3 tag studio. Perhaps this access violation stuff is related to this hanging bug?

Hmm, interesting indeed... Can someone else confirm that you only get this problem when the Explorer dirtree in Mp3/Tag Studio is open?

Thanks for the info cupon, keep it coming!

I also am getting the "Thread Creation" error while using Auto Rename From Tags.

After reading these posts, it seems a common demoninator is the "Use Explorer Browse Tree".

After getting the error and hitting the OK button many, many times, I hit Undo to go back to the way it was, turned off the Explorer Browse Tree, and tried the rename process again. This time no errors.

Now the bad news, just for giggles, I hit undo on the same directory again, turned Explorer Browse Tree back on, and tried the rename once more. This time no errors. Go Figure.

Thanks for the info!

It would be really great if some of the people in this thread would be able to test special builds of Mp3/Tag Studio to be able to efficiently fix this bug.

Please email me if you would like to help in this way, and I will send special builds to you, for testing.

Thanks!

It looks like the explorer tree view is probably at the very least a contributing factor.  I've just been experimenting and every single click I do in the explorer tree which causes a switch to a different folder increases the thread count in the app by 1 and this never goes back down.

I've also just done a few rename operations with the explorer tree closed (i more or less always left it open in normal use previously) and they've all worked out just fine, no excess threads created so that's a good sign.  However, I then did the same operations with explorer tree open afterwards (both leaving explorer tree in the same folder and also switching out of and back into the folder before executing) and had no problems with these either.  These were specifically in some folders I knew I'd had problems with previously but as other people have mentioned it's unpredictible - sometimes it works normally for a particular operation, sometimes it doesn't - and in these cases it worked just fine this time around.

I'd be happy to test specific versions for you: audion at gmail dot com

krage, I think I've found the problem (it was in a third-party control), and I just mailed a special test build to you. Please confirm in this thread that the problem is gone. If anyone else also wants to test, just give me your email address and I'll send you the special test build too.

Thanks everyone for the info that made it possible to track down this bug!

Hi Magnus,

I've experienced the same problem. For me it appears only after some repeated renamings, not with the first time of "Rename from tag". After the 2nd or 3rd directory renaming process the renaming gets slower and slower (the upper explorer frame of MP3TS starts to blink) and for one of the next directories to rename I receive the "Thread creation" error which causes MP3TS to hang...

Hope this could additionally help to fix the problem...
Cheers,
Michael

Maybe it could have to do with the fact that the upper Explorer window on the left of MP3TS is not able to refresh anymore?

When I rename, create or even delete new directories in the Windows Explorer while MP3TS is open, the upper MP3TS Explorer frame doesn't update, F5 (Refresh) is not possible.

So e.g. clicking on a directory within MP3TS, which I deleted or renamed outside of MP3TS with the Windows explorer, MP3TS displays the directory in red letters.

Only closing and re-opening MP3TS helps to display the changed directories. Maybe MP3TS also gets a problem with renamed filenames, although the lower MP3TS explorer frame (the explorer browse tree) DOES show changed filenames?

Maybe these two MP3TS explorer frames just collide with their different directory informations... just an idea...

Cheers,
Michael

Hi Magnus,

thanks for the patch!

I installed it, tried several times to rename some directories from tags, no problem any more.

If I should experience any other problems, I'll come back here and report it, but for now it seems to be fixed.

Enjoy the rest of the Sunday,
cheers,
Michael

Sorry for the delayed response, been a little busy and hadn't checked back in this thread.  I haven't received any email from you actually (just checked again to be sure, and also checked i listed my address correctly).  Sounds like good news that it seems to be working better though :)

Hi Magnus,

but something still doesn't seem to work: how can I refresh the upper Explorer frame within MP3TS?

Example: While working on my MP3 Collection I realized that I misspelled a directory called "Kool And The Gang". So I turned to the Windows Explorer and renamed that directory to "Kool & The Gang":

Then I turned back to MP3TS, but I can't refresh the Explorer frame, there it is still "Kool And The Gang" (marked red! )  :

So the only way to access these files within the renamed directory is by shutting down MP3TS and to restart it.

Or is there any other simple solution that I just haven't recognized?

Thanks,
Michael

oh, I forgot something...

in the case described above even selecting the correct directory using the "Browse..." button of MP3TS doesn't work:

The directory CAN be selected this way, but the files within that directory still can't be accessed by MP3TS, the custom file selection frame stays empty, until closing and restarting MP3TS.

Strange, isn't it?

Cheers,
Michael

The refresh problem is known, and will be fixed. The bug with the thread creation error was actually in the auto-refresh feature of the Explorer dir tree control (not my own code), so I had to disable it temporarily. Thanks for the report anyway.
