Hi out there,

I am trying to standardise the format, in which my mp3 files are stored on my disk into the format

Track No. space Title - Album - Interpret.mp3

I have a lot file names that start with a - and want to remove that.

Any help, please

I would suggest first importing all the information in the file names with the Auto tag tool inside Mp3/Tag Studio, and then rename all the files with the Auto rename tool.

You will need to perform one sweep with the Auto tag tool for each different format of filenames that you have. Please see the help file for the Auto tag tool for more info about how to use it.

Magnus,

thanks a lot, it works like a charm. Most files are done.  But one format I can’t catch and change:

If a filename contains a hyphen at the beginning, e.g.
– 01 - She loves you – The Beatles.mp3, then I
can’t remove that hyphen. The same problem I have, if I want to remove the hyphen between the
track no. and the title. The latter would allow me to list in the MS Media  player all songs in alphabetical
sequence, irrespective of the track no in front.  If I do have a hyphen between track no. and title, then
Media player sorts according to the track no.s.

Do you have any idea?

Thanks a lot

Use Direct Rename.

Filter on filename with

§-

(meaning, starts with a -),

then input template of:

- <Custom1>.mp3

output template of:

<Custom 1>.mp3

and you will have cleared all the initial hyphens.

With regard to your second point.  I don't use Media player myself, I prefer "Quintessential Player" (by Quinnware), so I don't completely understand the problem.

First, when you say "remove the hyphen between track number and the title" do you mean to replace the string " - " by " "?  If so, I have two additional questions.  First, does Media player sort on the file names, rather than on the tags?  Second, what are the sorting rules?  I don't understand why "01 ###" would sort as if the "01 " where not there, but "01 - ###" would not.

Note that removing the hyphen should be easy using direct rename of files.

Calberga,
First of all a big thank you for your help.  I got so far now that all unwanted strings "-", sorry for the hyphen (I am German), are history. That really became easy using your advice.
Secondly, all unwanted spelling mistakes or unwanted space are also history.
To use an example from the artist Brooklyn Bounce:
The filenames are now "Club Bizarre.mp3" or "01 Club Bizarre.mp3" and so are most files. From that base  I can add the album or the artist or whatever.
But I hit another snag in the form of "03 Brooklyn Bounce Bring It Back (Derb Mix).mp3". I am now struggeling to either remove the artist or switch positions for artist and title to read as filename "03 Bring It Back (Derb Mix) - Brooklyn Bounce.mp3". The test runs so far have come up with a correct cleaning of the artist once I removed that field in the target file format, but it also removes the title for those files that have the title first. I sometimes have the impression as if either the definition within the tags for artist and title are not split or the two are not properly sparsed. Any idea?
To answer your questions: yes, I mean the string "-" when I speak of the hyphen, sorry. On the Media Player I can't really give you an answer as I don't know myself. I am not that hot on these things. I just use Media Player and - through trial an error - found out that a string between track number and title causes Media Player to sort on the track number; without the string it sorts on the title. Maybe some one else does know better?
Thanks for the Quintessential player, I shall definetely try it.

First, I misled you, "hyphen" is the correct word.  "String" is just a computer term for a sequence of characters, usually written with quotation marks at each end.  Sometimes a single quote ('example one';) is used, more often a double quote ("example two").  So I was asking if you wanted to remove only the hyphen ("-"), or the hyphen plus the surrounding spaces (" - ").
I should have included the (most probable) choice of the hyphen plus one of the adjacent spaces ("- " or " -").

What was the original file name (or the Title and Artist values) for the example you give, where the title and artist are all together?  Did, by any chance, your earlier manipulations remove some sort of separator?

I must confess that I don't do much with pop music, although I do have a lot of folk, but more classical.  (Which has its own problems.)  I think I spend more time re-tagging files and anything else!

Oh, and don't hesitate to ask me to explain what I write, my wife says nobody understands me!  (And we are both American English speakers.)
