Hey folks I am in the early stages of trying to collect album cover art for my meticulously-organized collection of albums.

Does anybody have any tips that could save me a lot of fruitless googling? Thanks!

These are some of the most famous archives for CD-covers:

http://www.cdcovers.cc/
http://www.mega-search.net/index.php?setlanguage=en
http://www.cd-covers.com/
http://www.cd-cover-search.com/
http://www.coveruniverse.com/

Any other good tips people?

BestBuy.com does good sized cover art 500x500
Also you could try GotchaCovered.
Software that can scan your albums and search for Cover Art based on Tags or Folder Name

Very cheap software ($5) that can get it all for you. Well a lot of it. I use it and its pretty good.

BestBuy.com only gave me 100x100.

The problem with all these free cover sites is they are free. That means they go down (1 out of 5 are down now). They are slow as molasses, not always searchable, files are missing, servers are non-existant. After 8 attempts only 1 cover was gotten from the 5 sites listed.

Amazon.com has 100x100 on the album page. Most have a larger image link for 300x300
towerrecords.com has 170x170
cduniverse.com has 140x140
barnesandnobles.com has 100x100
Windows MEdia pLayer will pull down 200x200, but it unless you stop it it will overwrite your ID3 tags with its own. Don't believe that checkbox that says fill in missing info, no overwrite. This is MS--they wipe out all your field and fill in their own, including that all music is categorized as "Rock"

For lp,45,cassettes,cds that are hard to find try:
http://www.musicstack.com/show.cgi
It is totally hit and miss if a seller scanned the cover, and the quality ranges from crpa to superb. But it is a quick search engine and faster than photographing them all yourself.

This one does it for you, automatically based on your folder names. Works great.

One of the best free sites that I have found for album covers is www.rateyourmusic.com .  It is a user supported system, so if you have a cover that meets or exceeds their quality requirements, you can upload it. Note, however, that I once tried to upload a cover from an Ebay sale record and it was rejected because of the stupid camera icon Ebay puts in the bottom right corner of it's images. Still, the number of available covers (and album information) on the site is pretty amazing, and the cover art is much better in quality than www.allmusic.com .
