I think your program is great for managing ID3 tags, but I've decided to use Monkey's Audio for ripping my personal CD collection so that I have perfect backups. APE files only support ID3v1.1 and APE v1 tags, with APE tags being the preferred choice due to limitations in ID3v1.1. If you could add support for APE tags I would be a happy camper. APE tags are also used by MusePack (MPC) files, and possibly other formats.

I can't promise anything, but if you give me a link to the specs I'll take a look at them at least.

There is some documentation available for APE Tags v1 and v2 here: http://141.35.2.84/~pfk/mpp/sv8/apetag.html

Monkey's Audio doesn't support APE Tag v2 yet, it just uses v1. Musepack support both v1 and v2. Monkey's Audio will support v2 tags in an upcoming release.

Monkey's Audio is open-source, you can download the source code from the bottom of this page: http://www.monkeysaudio.com/developers.html and if you look in Source\MACLib you'll see the files ApeTag.h and ApeTag.cpp, which contain a C++ implementation for v1 tags.

Regards,

Jeff

TokyoElbow: by "perfect backups" I believe they are referring to the compression scheme used. MP3 is "lossy" - basically, some audible data is sacrified in order to achieve high compression. APE is lossless - when APE files are decoded, they should be identical to the originals.

I second this. I've tagged all my mp3s with apev2 tags, so I'd like some support too! :)

Are people using ape tags for mp3:s, or are you just kidding? Why would you use these instead of ID3v2 tags?

Btw, newfeauters, did you ever consider registering an account here on the board instead of being constantly unregistered? :) Someone might steal your name you know. ;)

Magnus - it's not a widespread practice, but some folks do use ape tags for mp3 files. The new foobar player (its forum is hosted on hydrogen audio, I'm too lazy to find and paste the link) handles such files.

Not sure what the advantages are supposed to be, haven't investigated much.

Ok, thanks for the info Disposable Hero.

I'm not very fond of adapting new technologies just for the sake of it though, so if someone knows any advantages with ape tags over ID3v2 tags it would be nice to hear about it?

Magnus - this isnt the only name ive posted under :)

About ape2 - yes i tagged them for foobar :)

I have both id3v2 and apev2 in my files, but at the moment its hard to keep them synced.

The advantages of the ape2 tag is its very open and flexible structure (which works very well with some of foobar's features) and it goes at the end of the files where many prefer. Yes its very hazy but I don't know the technical details. The other major thing is foobar uses the ape2 tag to keep replaygain data.

Judging from that page there are practically no advantages with APE over ID3v2, except that ID3v2 are more complex to implement for the software author. But I'm completely ok with ID3v2, so I guess that settles that. ;)
