Now that Guerillasoft is defunct, I wonder if Jon would be amenable to licensing parts of his code for inclusion in other software like TS.  Specifically, I'd really like to have the encoder-guess feature and the analyzer.  If you're in the process of cleaning up a quantity of downloaded tracks, it is often helpful to know what encoder was used and for VBR files, know what the bitrate profile looks like.

Also, often I have a need to compare one version of a track with another.  TS together with EncSpot have the means to do that, and it would be really handy if you could drag and drop files into TS's window for processing.

Now that I think about it, the drag-and-drop would be extremely useful in of itself.  Often files you want to work on are in different directories.  TS is strictly directory-oriented and it would be very handy if files could be accessed across directories.

Let me also add a vote of support for those looking for recursive operations, like VBR fix.  It would be very nice to be able to test, recursively, for any property of an MP3 and to generate a list, with full pathnames, based on the results of that test.  Then use that list as input to other operations.

IIRC, the original EncSpot algo was based upon another developer's work, which did not have any kind of license attached to it but was just published to be informative. Perhaps that info could be sought out, if Guerillasoft's licensing terms were too restrictive (or non-existent).

I don't think my own wishes for the functionality are quite as ambitious as your own  :)  I don't mind the directory-based view. Perhaps if an EncSpot style tool were implemented as a tab with the other file tools, and as an option or button within the Browse/Edit tab. That would be very nice.

But it's all speculation until Magnus gets back  :p

EDIT: the other developer's work mentioned above should be here:

Ok, thanks for the suggestions and info. I have saved that encoder guesser code for future reference.

Yep, I have that one too.
I only think the code for version 1.0 was released though, and it was probably further developed relatively much after that. Does anyone know what the last version of EncSpot was? What has happended to GuerillaSoft btw, you said that it was "defunct" Fiddleminger? What do you mean?

I don't have any insider knowledge.  Guerillasoft just disappeared -- poof! -- around the first of this year.  No fond farewells or anything like that, the site just went away.  The domain no longer exists, so emailing isn't an option either.  Too bad because EncSpot was fairly useful.

The EncSpot source code floating around on version 2.0. I happen to have it. Not sure what, if any, licensing Jon had for EncSpot. Does anyone know. I don't recall ever seeing any licensing info. His algorithms for determining encoder and such were far beyond what is available at http://shibatch.sourceforge.net/ . I just stopped by to check out you application here. I currently use Tag&Rename but it has limited reporting capabilities. This is my main area of concern right now. I want a tagger/cataloguer that can export Encoder Type and Encoder into some kind of report. I am always looking for better files so i base my decisions on what type of encoder, encoder type, and bitrate (i.e. LAME, VBR, CBR, 192k, etc.). I am going to install your application and give it a try. Looks good from all the screens and info.

Thanks for letting me ramble here.
