I have my files organised in the following structure:

...<first letter of artist name>\<artist>\<artist> - <track> - <album>.

I can see how I can use MP3TS auto-rename to do all of that apart from the top level directory - first letter of artist name - which helps to break the folders into more manageable chunks.

Another program I have used lets me do this by defining <artist>^ and I tried that but it didn't work. Is it possible?

Thanks.

One way of doing this would be in a two-step operation (of course recorded into a macro so it still would be accessible at the click of a button :)), as follows:

1.
Dump all the necessary information (artist, track and album) into a text file with the custom list tool.

2.
Use the "rename from list" tool to build up a new file name and path of any format from this information, using e.g. fixed-length and multi-part fields.

This will work very good, and as I said, remember to record it into a macro to have it accessible at the click of a single button from then on.
