I have never heard about anything like this before. Judging from your description, with the earlier working versions now crashing too, it might very likely be a problem local to your system. The ad banner is just a static gif image, and should have nothing to do with Internet Explorer or any other outside dependencies. It also wouldn't crash in connection to changing working dir if it had something to do with the banner, since the two are completely unrelated. I'm very sorry to be unable to be of more assistance, but if the problem is indeed in your operating system there is not much I can do. 
Did anyone else here ever see anything like this?
