I've only found one very small thing working differently in v3 that I can't seem to fix.

I name my files very simply -- just <artist> - <title>, unless the year field in the tag is filled, in which case I use <artist> - <title> <year>. Those are the only two templates entered for either mass renaming or renaming an individual file from the right-click menu.

Before v3, once I had used the <year> template (so that it was the last used), all files were renamed correctly, either when I did mass renamings or renamed individual files from the right-click menu within the program. (Similarly, outside the program, in Explorer, I could select a number of files and pick the template that included the year, and everything would be renamed correctly, whether the year was actually available or not. If the <year> field was empty, MP3/Tag Studio would simply leave it out.

Now, with v3, everything works the same -- except that, in all situations, MP3/Tag Studio now leaves a trailing space between the artist name and the ".mp3" if the year field is empty.

Examples:

I have a song entitled "Song No. 1" by "Joe Blow," with the year "1993" entered in the tag field, and a second song entitled "Song No. 2" by "Jon Smith," with no year entered.

Prior to v3, if I used my <artist> - <title> <year> template, I'd get the following:

Joe Blow - Song No. 1 1993.mp3
Jon Smith - Song No. 2.mp3

Now, what I get is:

Joe Blow - Song No. 1 1993.mp3
Jon Smith - Song No. 2 .mp3

Note the space at the end of the last title, prior to the extension.

I haven't been able to figure out how to get rid of that space. I tried having the advanced case-fix function switch " .mp3" to ".mp3" after the case-fix, but that doesn't work. (I also have the switch marked for removing leading and trailing spaces, but it doesn't seem to do anything.

Any suggestions?

Great program, by the way. I have a huge music collection and I keep around 10,000 mp3s on my system at any given time, and I've tried a lot of tagging programs over the last few years before settling on this one.

The reason for this is that in earlier versions, if the last field in a rename template was empty, the last separator was removed too. This caused some problems for certain advanced mode templates though, and hence it had to be removed. Now it just does exactly what you tell it to do in the end of the name, which is to output a space and then the contents of the year field. If the year field is empty, the space is the last thing you'll see in the filename.

Instead, you can use a filter that only processes files with empty year fields and vide versa, that will work. I might also re-add the above mentioned functionality as a (non-default) option.

By the way, the reason that your attempt to fix it with the "removing leading and trailing spaces" casefix tool option didn't work is that it is applied field-wise, only to the fields selected for casefixing. The reason that your attempt to fix it with the string replace tool didn't work is that is operates only on the filename without extension (not to risk messing up the file extensions so that people can't double-click to play them later, thinking that they are broken).

Thanks for the explanation. I had a feeling that it was something that was essentially a bug in v2 that just happened to work as a feature for me.

I understand about using the filter. In fact, thinking about it that way, I realize that the real problem (from my point of view) is that the right-click menu when working with files in Browse/Edit mode will only allow renaming using the current settings, which seems to mean the template most recently used. If the right-click menu within the Browse/Edit mode allowed me to select the template (as it does in Explorer), I'd have no problem.

I realize that if I go the mass rename tab, I can select the template I want to use (as long I use an appropriate filter). I've just gotten used to doing the renaming this other way, as I work with the tags in Browse/Edit mode.

It would be a nice option, to be able to do it the way I'm used to, but I can easily re-train myself to do it the way the program expects (which is a logical way to do it).

Thanks again.

I'm not completely sure about what you are describing that you want to do, but it seems like you want to select a bunch of files and then process them with a certain template, right? For this you can first go to the mass rename tool and choose the correct template (as you said). To be able to select single files in the current working directory and then process them with a certain template, you can use the custom file select mode (checkbox in the working directory box) to be able to select any files you like, then choose a template from the drop-down box, and then press the execute button. You can also use the filter to single out any files you like, so you don't need to select them manually.

Maybe you already knew all that, and in that case I'm sorry for misunderstanding your post.

The reason for not adding those options to the browse tool menu is to keep it as clean and easy to use as possible, since there are already special tools for mass file processing once you're inside the program (contrary to when you're out in Explorer). I hope you understand this reasoning.

Thanks.
