Topic: Mass Retagging Due To iTunes Tag Reading Issues, Need To Save Time!< Next Oldest | Next Newest >

iTunes reads tags a bit differently than say, Winamp or foobar2000.  I got from another forum that it reads information from id3v2.3 tags, some of which are different from id3v2.4 tags I have in my collection.  Because I have an iPod, the discrepancies between the tagging in my collection is frustrating, but no one seems to have a quick solution to fix the problem without wiping the tags and going back into a reputable tagging program and doing them over.

Is there a way to create a list of all of the tags and retag these files quickly?  I tried doing that on a few test folders with the list creator and then putting in the same variables in the "tag/rename from list" function, but it errors and tells me that there are too many entries in the list than files to process.  Is there anything I can do?

Sure, no problem.

First of all, you don't have to use the list method for this at all. You can simply use the "Direct tag manipulation" tool, with a single dummy translation something like:

"Artist"  ---->  "Artist"

and the files will be converted from ID3v2.4 to ID3v2.3 automatically!

But if you still want to use the list method, is sounds like you are not including the file paths in your list. Make sure to use the <Filepath absolute> field in your outputted list, and match it with the <Target file AP> field while doing the import (it's an advanced mode field).

And please spread the news about these fixes to all your iTunes/iPod friends, so that they can make sure their mp3 tags work perfectly with their iTunes and iPods too. :)

The "direct tag manipulation" tool did not work for me, but the list method worked after I added the <Filepath Absolute> field.  One problem, however, seems to be that there are unnecessary spaces in front of each of the fields which gets to be extremely frustrating in the genre field, where I cannot remove the spaces automatically.  Is there anything I'm doing wrong?

It sounds like you used the "Fixed field width" option in the list maker tool, just disable it and the spaces will be gone.

And in exactly what way did the direct tag manipulation method not work for you?

The tags did not change when I opened the files again in iTunes.

Ok, sounds strange, could be due to several other reasons though. I'm glad the other method I suggested worked good for you anyway.

Did you delete the files from iTunes, then re-import them AFTER you retagged?
It won't pick up the changes until you remove the entries and re-import.
