Topic: Convert won't write over existing Mozilla bookmark< Next Oldest | Next Newest >

I attempted to convert my IE favorites to Mozilla bookmarks while overwriting the existing Mozilla bookmarks file. BMC BMC indicated that the bookmarks file would be overwritten and then that the favorites were successfully converted, but the Mozilla bookmarks file remained the same. All browsers were closed at the time. I managed convert the favorites only after removing the existing Mozilla bookmarks file. The same problem happened between two different installs of Mozilla. I have not tried to convert Mozilla bookmarks over existing IE favorites. I don't have Netscape installed to test.

Hmm, ok, strange.
And you are sure that you were writing to the correct bookmark file too? (Netscape/Mozilla have a nasty habit of scattering out different bookmark files throughout the computer).

Also, I know that at least Netscape (which is partly based on the same code as Mozilla) has a default option to leave a "background process" running, even if the browser seems to be closed (to be able to bring out the browser faster when it is requested). This might have something to do with it, if it is as you claim, that the bookmark file is immediately overwritten with the old bookmarks after it has been converted (if Bookmark Converter does not complain that it cannot write to the file, it has indeed written the bookmarks to the file, and then it must be some other program that overwrites it again if it later is found to be in the "old state").

I am a new user (today) and this post exactly matches what I am experiencing. I got around the problem by directing the output file to a temporary folder then dragging and dropping the converted bookmark file in the appropriate folder. This seems to indicate a bug rather than a rewriting of the original bookmark file. My attempts involved Firebird, IE6, Netscape7.1/Mozilla1.4 (same bookmark file), and Opera7.

This is not a bug in Bookmark Converter, but indeed related to the target browsers themselves. Please see this thread for more info regarding this issue.

Thanks for the info. I really like BMC and all my bookmark files are now in sync.
