-Brading Software Message Board +--Forum: Bookmark Converter Support and Bug Reports +---Topic: IE -> Firefox merge skips bookmarks started by Jim Freeman Posted by: Jim Freeman on Nov. 25 2004,01:48 Both 3.1 and the 3.2 beta I just downloaded today won't merge IE bookmarks into Firefox 1.0 bookmarks via Synhronize Bookmark Collections. The timestamp in the Firefox bookmarks.html gets updated as soon as the merge completes, but newly added IE bookmarks don't show up in Firefox's bookmarks.html. Yet I tried Quick Merge Bookmark Collections to a new file, and that works ok. There's nothing odd about the bookmarks (for example, one I tried that fails is www.dell.com in the root of the IE Favorites tree). I'm running Win2k Posted by: Magnus Brading on Nov. 25 2004,02:29 This is most likely due to a problem that has been discussed on this board before, namely, for some users and in some versions, Firexfox seems to automatically revert its bookmark file to an earlier state when an external program has edited it. I'm currently looking into solving this, but if you have any clues or observation to share from when this happens on your system I'd gladly accept them. I know that Firefox keeps a backup bookmark file (named "bookmarks.bak") in the same directory as the live bookmark file, please try to overwrite both of these with the new merged file instead of just overwriting the live one, and see if it makes any difference (i.e. copy the newly converted/merged file "bookmarks.html" to the name "bookmarks.bak" too). Thanks! Posted by: Jim Freeman on Nov. 29 2004,23:30 I just tried it today and now it merges/syncs fine! I've changed nothing on my system since I wrote the 11/25 email. I have no idea why it works now. I don't think this relates to the .bak file, as both today and on 11/25 Firefox 1.0 was not running during the merge/sync. After the the sync I was simply clicking on the updates Firefox bookmarks.html file and noting the missing links. After the merge/sync completes, if I then start Firefox it doesn't revert back to the .bak saved version. end |
