In Browse/Edit tags & flags... with focus set on one of the edit fields (title, artist etc.) and using the keyboard shortcut Alt+ up or down key to move to next/previous file, if the alt key is released after the up/down key, it is interpreted as an incomplete ASCII entry (as in Alt + 0160 being non-breaking space for example), and prints a "?" into whichever field has active focus at the time, which quite annoys me :)

Yeah... I know it’s because I'm uncoordinated and can't release the alt and up/down key at precisely the same time... but maybe there are other people like me too? :)

Hmm, very strange, I cannot reproduce this and have never heard of it before.

Does anyone else here get the same effect? Which operating system version are you using? Maybe it's a (non-default) Windows setting that lets you insert alt+code characters into texts (just like in good old DOS)?

Operating System: Windows XP, 2000, 98SE

I thought everyone could do alt+... characters?

I've always been able to... ◘☻♠ <-- alt+ up, down, right arrow keys (alt + left = go back in IE...).

Only possible weird thing is Microsoft Intellitype, Microsoft Natural Pro keyboard (USB and PS2), but from my experience any keyboard, any PC, will generate a "null" or "?" or something character on an alt+ any numberpad key (which includes the arrow keys and insert, delete etc.) or will generate the appropriate alt+code if you type it. I use non-breaking spaces that way quite often :)

I only get this effect with the 1-9 number pad keys, not the "special" keys like the arrows, insert, delete and such? :( You are talking about the "normal" arrow keys, right (and not the arrows on the 2,4,6,8 keys)?

Might it have something to do with num-lock or something like that maybe? Please try to experiment with the num-lock state, and see if this changes something, ok?

Hello,

Yes, I am talking about the normal arrow keys. I have tried num-lock, scroll-lock etc. It makes no difference. Maybe it is my keyboard, it has been a long time since I used a different one?

Hmm, are you using a non-english Windows version? Certain non-english operating system versions, where the native alphabet in non-latin (like Cyrillic, Chinese, Thai, ...), have more complex support for entering multi-key-combination characters than other. Maybe that's what causing it?

Hello,

Standard US keyboard layout, standard US version.

I'll test it on my Windows98 machine with a normal keyboard and default windows 98 drivers, and let you know what happens, but I probably won't be doing this test for a few days (machine is currently inoperable).

Ok, sounds great, I'm looking forward to hearing about it. But no rush, take your time. 8)

I tried to reproduce this on my system:
Win2K, SP2 (US release)
$25 Keytronic keyboard (effectively a generic kb)

Unable to reproduce the behaviour unless:
Numlock enabled, arrow keys on numeric keypad used with either ALT key

Hello,

Sorry for the delay.

I tested using generic keyboard and cannot reproduce problem. It seems my fancy Microsoft Natural Pro keyboard causes it somehow, so probably not much you can do about it :)
