 3.01 crashes trying to load a directory of 19,000 files. The OS is XP with 512K Ram and 1600 mhz CPU. Any help in solving this problem is appreciated.

Exactly when does the crash occur? Immediately when setting that directory to be the working directory?

My immediate guess would be that the crash originates from the Delphi listboxes in e.g. the browse tool (which are trying to display all those files), and then it won't be as easy for me to fix it, since the problem is not in my own code. :(

Anyway, maybe you can temporarily split up the files in this directory into two or more directories while processing the files, and then join them all again afterwards?

Just an idea, Magnus... can you put an option in there to disable the displaying of the files?  To be more specific, can you have it simply allow you to choose a directory to work with, rather than showing the contents of that directory?  Winamp does that when you try adding directories to a playlist.

I guess I could, but then again, processing 19000 files in the same directory might be a bad idea for other reasons too, and this option would only be used by the very few users who actually try this, so I'm not sure if it would be worth it (considering the GUI complexity vs usability ratio).

Hehe... good point!  I'd tend to agree that it would only be used by a few people.  I guess most of us with thousands of MP3's have organized them into some sort of directory structure prior to it getting that out of hand.  (No offense, Charles!;)

:p This method of keeping all the files in one directory serves to be good in preventing from having dups when surfing the news groups. It offers me a quick and easy way of detecting dups. I was using a program by MP3Fox pro that uses Access for it's DB but did not offer all the other benefits of MP3Tag. I think access db would solve this problem. If you can offer me a good solution to check for dups while downloading please do. I'm still learning. Thanks
