The most likely reason for this is that one (or more) of the files you're processing have corrupted ID3v2 tags, which could cause this problem when accesing them. If you can pinpoint and clean up these files, the crashes will most likely disappear.
Try to process the mp3s in smaller chunks, and when an error occurs in one chunk, split it into even smaller processing chunks until you have found the offending files.
