-Brading Software Message Board +--Forum: Mp3/Tag Studio Support and Bug Reports +---Topic: Renaming title started by farmergeorge Posted by: Guest on Mar. 03 2008,11:04 My MP3 player plays files alphabetically by title and so I prefix titles with 01, 02, 03... etc. Can this be done on a group of MP3 files naming each title with ## <title> where ## is incremented automatically Posted by: calberga on Mar. 03 2008,16:23 I'm not the expert (don't believe what it says in the header) but I'll enter an opinion. As far as I know, there is no machinery in Mp3/TagStudio to generate consecutive integers. So, one problem is where to get them. For various purposes, such as setting track numbers, I have created a file containing the numbers 1 to 200, one per line, which I can use in the Rename/Set Tags from List tab. (I also have variations for special cases, such as a file starting with 0, and others starting with other values -- don't ask! ![]() But there are two other problems, where to put the numbers so you can use them, and how to get the files in the order you want. As to the first of these, I often pick some obscure V2 tag, say <V2_WPAY>, and run a Tag from List to set it. Then pick another such tag, <V2_WCOM> e.g., and set it from the filename. Finally, Rename from tags with <V2_WPAY> <V2_WCOM>, and when you are done use Mass Cleanup of Tags to get rid of the temps. Magnus would tell you to write a macro to do it in one swell foop. The one question left, is how to order the files. The Tag from List, without a filename specified, will process the files in order of the filenames. I'm not certain what order it uses, as XP can display files in different orders, depending on some setting or other. In particular, if you have TweakUI there is an option for Explorer "Use intuitive filename sorting" which treats 1, 01, etc the same in ordering the filenames. I really don't know if Mp3/Tag Studio is affected by this, we will have to await the arrival of the All Mighty Author. <soapbox rant> This would be a place where the ability to specify two (2) files in the Rename/Tag from List would be very useful. Then one could create a file of filenames, edit it to establish the desired order, and then pair it with the list of numbers. the R/TfL already handles lists longer than the number of files in the target directory, and shouldn't have any problem with one list being a different length than the other. Magnus, please? </soapbox rant> I'm sorry this is so convoluted, but this is the only solution I have reached that doesn't involve extensive text file editing.
