+---Topic: Importing into IE started by Chris

I have a quick "does it do xxx" question:

I primarily use Firefox to 'manage' my bookmarks - and just use IE to access them, while at work.

Whenever I 'import' bookmarks into IE, however, RATHER than it importing in the same order I set it up as; instead, IE
alphabetizes all the bookmarks. I don't have my bookmarks organized in alphabetical order, so it then requires me RE-organizing each bookmark, after the import.

Iunderstand this program will 'keep' the order of the bookmarks, but, from the screenshots, I couldn't tell if it definitively kept my original order. Is that the case? If my bookmarks are not organized in ANY way (except - my OWN way, by priority...) - will they be imported into IE in that same way, when using this program?

Thanks!
Chris

Normally, the order of the bookmarks are always kept, no matter which browser you make the changes in. BUT, in Internet Explorer 6 SP1, Microsoft changed the format of their data that keeps this order in a very bad way, which have caused some problems to adapt Bookmark Converter to this. Full support for this new data format is almost complete in Bookmark Converter now though, but in the current version you can only read the order of IE favorites, not write it, because of this Microsoft upgrade. Hence, if you have IE favorites in a sync set, you must perform the changes in the IE browser to keep the order of these new bookmarks, just like you say.

In any case, this will hopefully be resolved soon. You can also read a little more about this problem if you bring up the new "Internet Explorer favorite ordering data backup/restore/repair" tool from the "Utilities" menu in the new version 3.2 (beta 2), which was just released.

Hi Magnus,

Thanks for getting back to me...I may have worded my question incorrectly - so, let me just rephrase it, as the answer is pivotal to me ordering your software:

I manage my bookmarks at home, in Firefox. I will send these bookmarks to my work computer, which does use IE6/SP1.

I never send favorites/bookmarks from the IE computer to the Firefox computer -- ALWAYS from Firefox to IE.

In the past, when I've 'imported' my bookmarks into IE, IE automatically alphabetizes the bookmarks, and does NOT keep the order that I've set up in Firefox.

Will your program keep the order I've set up in Firefox, when I bring the bookmarks into IE? I'm not concerned with reversing that process...it will ALWAYS be from Firefox into IE, only.

Thanks!

It will normally always do this in any direction, yes. Right now there is a small problem with the new IE order data format though, which makes it not preserving the order when converting from Firefox to IE if you have applied SP1 to Internet Explorer 6. It will hopefully be fixed soon anyway, and then it will preserve this order again.

OK - so, I should hold off on purchasing it then? When do you envision this 'bug' being worked out?

Thanks!

You don't risk anything by purchasing it, because the licenses are lifetime licenses which will cover all future versions too anyway. About the time estimate, I hope to have it fixed in the next release.

And remember, it is only writing of IE favorite collections that won't keep the order, reading them will, and writing all other bookmark types also will.

Magnus,

I tried to do what I needed to do (convert firefox bookmarks into IE favorites) and everything worked wonderfully!

So, I'm going to buy the program. I do have a new, different, unrelated question:

I understand I'll be purchasing ONE license, for ONE computer. What happens if, for example, my company decides to upgrade my machine (which is very likely), or, for whatever reason, I decide to move the program from one computer to another. Is that transferability supported.

Thanks!

I'm glad you like the program! And yes, no problem about moving a license, the main thing for the license is that you don't use it on multiple computers at the same time, and that you don't share it with other people.

For more detailed license related questions, please contact me by email instead. Thanks!
