At which exact point does this happen? Immediately when executing the program? Before or after the main program window is shown? Are you running the program from a local drive or a network drive? Can you tell me the exact path in your computer where you have installed the program?

By the way, this error code indicates that the program is attempting to open a file with an erroneous filename.

Hmm, ok, what are the source and target bookmark collection paths/types? Is the conversion gauge still at 0% when it happens?

Have you made any changes to the default global settings (especially the "use non-default directory for misc data storage")?

C:\Documents and Settings\EFVZ\Favorites
C:\Program Files\Netscape\Users
Gauge at 1%
Read Bookmarks 5
Read folders 2
No changes to the global settings
Thanks,

Ok, it would be great if you could put the source bookmark collection (i.e. the favorites I assume?) in a zip file and send it to me, so I can analyze the problem and fix it if it is a bug in BMC.

I found the problem! Two of my Favorites were for Russian sites in Cyrillic! When I deleted those two bookmarks it worked perfectly. AE

Great!

It would be really nice if you could send me some samples of such bookmarks causing this error. Do you think you can find some other Cyrillic favorites that do this and send them to me? Or maybe you even have the old ones still backed up? Then I would be able to fix the problem once and for all.

Thanks.

The problem has been determined to originate from Unicode names (a special kind of text strings that are mostly just used in operating systems with non-european/english alphabets). It would require relatively large rewrites of the code to support such strings in Bookmark Converter, but it might be implemented in a future version anyway.

Thank you for such prompt feedback. Well after years of accumulating Bookmarks, I guess this experience has forced me to do a real good cleanup of my Bookmarks ( shall make 2003 more productive and eliminate the guessing). I manually tested them all, and renamed in plain English everyone that had this funny naming convention. BCM, now seems to work great.

I must thank you for being available in this merry season and tip my hat to you for being so prompt at supporting and de-bugging.

A very big thank you and may 2003 be full off success and health for you, your family and customers. Keep up the excellent work.

Wondermine.

Hi!

Does this mean that MP3/Tag Studio will not work with Unicode at all? I'm using ISO-8859-15 for all filenames, but I'm not sure if they get translated to Unicode by Windows XP or Samba.

I was getting "I/O error 123" immediately when I try to use the context menu "Edit this directory in MP3/Tag Studio". After a few tries I started getting the error "Error reading main datafile, using defaults!" as well.

The directories I'm trying to edit are \\Dit\proj\audio\hifi\Aki Sirkesalo\Mielenrauhaa and its parent directory.

Once the main window comes up, I switched to "Browse/Edit tags & flags". However, no files show up there to select.

Clicking on "Custom file selection mode" gives me a list of files from C:\ (e.g. "boot.ini"), and clicking on "Use explorer browse tree" only shows the local drive.

Can I only use MP3/Tag Studio on drives, not UNCs? The above path is through a DFS server.

Regards,
+ Kim

Yes, for the moment there is no support for UNC paths in Mp3/Tag Studio, only mapped drives. :(

And about the Unicode in Bookmark Converter, there should only be a problem if the filenames contain characters that cannot be represented with the ASCII character set.

Finally, you seem to be in the wrong forum, this is the Bookmark Converter support forum. Please direct all questions about Mp3/Tag Studio to the Mp3/Tag Studio forums.

Yup. I got here as a result of a search for I/O error 123...

In any case, in addition to UNC paths not being supported, it looks like DFS is not supported either.

I'm not completely sure what you mean with "DFS", but anything that it mapped as a drive should work?

I have had the same problem, I get this error in v.3.1.
I wouldn't write but i've seen that you have implemented message saying that unicode has been detected and stuff.
There are some details that might help.
i've copied and pasted the text:
▪▫▪ kazungu.com ▪▫▪
and its encoding to ascii:
ª%«%ª% kazungu.com ª%«%ª%
And in hex:
AA 25 AB 25 AA 25 20 00 6B 00 61 00 7A 00
75 00 6E 00 67 00 75 00 2E 00 63 00 6F 00 6D 00
20 00 AA 25 AB 25 AA 25

Yep, that's Unicode, and it is not currently supported in bookmark/favorite names. Sorry about that. :(
