Hello Magnus, thanks for a great utility.

I am trying to use Substring Replacement in "Direct Tag Manipulation" to clean up artist names but I cannot get it to work. I see no error messages but no substrings are replaced. I have used most of the other advanced tools without a problem.

"Case fix and replace" is checked.

When I click Setup and select the "Substring Replacements" tab I see the following entry I created in the table:

Replace substring: The Who
With substring: Who
Case Sensitive: No
Apply: Before casefix

Back in the "Direct Tag Manipulation" screen I have the slider showing one tag enabled, which is set to:

<Artist> ---> <Artist>

When I click Execute I see a preview of 12 files in the folder. They all show "The Who" in both Artist tags. Even if I click "Do it for real" they still show "The Who" and not "Who" as I have specified in my substring replacement.

Is this an issue with the program? Or am I missing something?

I would be very grateful for your help. Thanks!

Chris

OK, sorry, I figured it out. To get substring replacement to work on the Artist field, I need to check the Artist Field box on the Letter Casefix tab.

Where are the casefix settings stored please? I looked in the mp3ts program folder and in the registry but so far have not found a place where I can bulk-load my artist name replacements.

I would be grateful for your help with this but I understand it's not exactly a standard tech support question!

These settings are stored in the main settings file (mp3ts.dat). Sadly, it has a binary format which you will not be able to edit yourself. You can backup this file after entering your translations manually though, to make sure you don't have to do it again.

In the upcoming update of Mp3/Tag Studio you will be able to do what you ask for though, editing certain text-based files yourself to affect these settings of operations, so stay tuned...

A first beta of this update it not far away now...

Thanks for your reply Magnus, I am glad to hear that you are continuing to work on the program.

In the homemade program I used before I found your utility I had a routine that worked pretty well to fix names so that they sorted correctly, like you would find them in a record shop:

Elvis Presley --> Presley, Elvis
The Who --> Who
Vince Guaraldi Trio --> Guaraldi, Vince Trio

It seems like the rest of the MP3 world has given up on sorting like this, but I still do it. Have you ever thought of supporting a feature like this in MP3 Tag Editor? This is the only function for which I still use my old homemade Excel program.

Thankfully, because of your thoughtful Tag/Rename from List feature I can still use your utility to do the hard part.

I guess I should say that this interesting part of my routine was that it works pretty well even on names that it has not seen before.

In other words, you don't need to configure it for every name that is to be reversed. It looks for common first names and changes the artist appropriately, and uses a short exception list for names that do not fit the common pattern.

I based my routine on a list of first names from the USA Census Bureau that is supposed to cover 99% of the (US) population -- though it seems to work pretty well for most European names too.
