I have many songs which appear in more than one folder.

If I renamed them all and they were in one folder I know the program would put #2, #3 etc.

Is there a way to get the program to do that when the duplicates are in different folders?  That would then alert me to the fact that the given song has a duplicate elsewhere.

I know I can XP search in the top folder for "mp3" and and then scroll through the list sorted by name to identify duplicates in different folders, but that's hard on my eyes.

An additional advantage would be, since the duplicate songs would have slightly different names at the end, I could freely transfer in XP large numbers of mp3's from one folder to another without worrying about overriding any.

Thanks.

Other than making a sorted list and looking for duplicates (much similar to what you suggest above), I guess you could use the direct rename tool in absolute path mode to temporarily move all files to one single directory and check them there (and then e.g. undo the operation to move them back when you're done). You cannot rename them dupes directly in their respective directories though, no. :(
