I downloaded mp3ts301.zip, unzipped, and ran setup. Setup seemed to install the program without problems but it does not launch on my IBM T21  (256MB RAM, 20 GB HD) laptop running Win2k SP2. When I attempt to launch the program, there are no messages. The disk spins briefly but nothing happens. No new apps or processes show up in Task Manager. I have loaded and used this program on another machine running Win2K SP3 without problems. My IBM T21 doesn't have a strange configuration but I do have a lot of apps installed. Any ideas?

PS
- Laptop is dual boot Win2k/Win98se, MPTS launches under Win98SE
- Win2K loads Norton A/V but even with A/V disabled (service stopped), MPTS won't launch.

This strange behavior has been reported by a few users before too, but I have never been able to reproduce it, and most users run the program without any problems at all on their systems. :(

These are the worst kind of problems, since without more info it is practically impossible for me to analyze and fix it. :(

Any info or ideas whatsoever about what might cause this would be greatly appreciated.

If you'd care to send me a debug version that perhaps logs status while loading, I'd be happy to work with you and forward the results. Meanwhile, I'll try shutting non-critical services down one by one.

---update

- stopping services didn't help
- looking at PROCESSES tab in Task Manager while repeatedly pressing the Enter key with focus on the MP3TS shortcut, I do see mp3tag_s.exe VERY BRIEFLY listed. Don't know if this means anything to you.

Hrm. I had this problem briefly, on Win2K SP2. Uninstall/reinstall fixed it, but no clue as to cause. It's possible that I was running Norton AV at that time - moved on since then, but used to use it.

Thanks for the info guys, and I'll see if I can put together such a debug version when I get some time.

Ok, thanks for the info again. I'll put together a debug version and contact you when it's ready.

Problem solved! I applied SP3 and MP3TS now launches normally. I was actually running on Win2k SP1, not SP2. Strange that MPTS was the only app to have problems but that's history now. Thanks.

Doh! I was just finished with the debug version. :) Thanks for the info anyway.

It would have been quite interesting to see where it crashed though. If anyone else has this problem, please post here and I will send you a debug version to test it ASAP.

I emailed you with an address to send the debug version. I'll load a machine with Win2k noSP and see if I can duplicate teh problem. Let me know if you didn't get the address.

I received your debug code (thanks! ) but was unable to reproduce the loading problem. I reinstalled Win2K on a lab PC (IBM M41) and applied SP1 but MPTS launched without problems. It must have been something unique to my T21 laptop when running Win2k SP1 (and some hotfixes, which ones I don't remember). If I can find another harddrive for my laptop, I'll try installing Win2k again. I think it may be a futile effort though. Even if I could duplicate the problem, I'm wondering if your debug code would ever actually have a chance to log anything since it looked like the OS wouldn't load the app. Anyway, thanks for trying to help me out. I figured I owed you at least equal effort in attempting to track the cause down.

Would the debug version be useful for the trimming problem?

No, sorry, it only logs how far the the program gets into its initialization before terminating.

No problem. :) I would make a debug-version for that problem too if it was equally easy, but it is much harder, so that's why I haven't done it. :(
