Many people want support for other kinds of tags than the common mp3 ID3 tags, and the biggest reason for not doing it has been that none of these other tag formats has become nearly as big and widespread as ID3 tags.

How have you done your research? Can you give me some precise numbers as to how many people worldwide use MP3 files vs. Lossless?

I think the reality is that you don't know, simply because your program doesn't support it. You're not looking beyond the market you already serve.

MP3/Tag Studio is a terrific program in many ways, but Magnus, as you yourself have seen on the Hydrogen Audio.org forum, millions of people are using lossless formats like ALAC and FLAC every single day. It's unfortunate that your program can't offer this feature, because many competing tag programs do offer the ability to tag lossless files.

I can send you links to 10 competing programs that offer lossless tagging, if you'd like to see for yourself. You might ask, why don't I just use those? I do, but I'd rather use your program, because it gives me access to more precise tag control than anything else.

I'm frustrated, because there are a dozen requests for this feature going back two years, and nothing has been done about it. We have a saying in America: this is a real drag.

Although I think the program is great now, it is great for what it DOES.

One of the things it doesn't do is support the other tag formats and file formats:  .ape, .flac, and .wav to name the most popular (although flac is beating out ape by a wide margin.)

As the internet expands, and as bandwidth is more readily available, and disk space becomes more affordable and available, people are moving toward lossless formats RAPIDLY.  A year ago, "lossless" was only for audiophiles.  Now, many times audio are done both lossless and in the older lossy formats, and most people have at least some lossless in their collecion.

As fast as things become available, I am switching to lossless, as I do audio editing and sound creation, and the lossy formats just don't hold up under several levels of editing.

It's inevitable.  Lossless is here.  Please???

Yeah - I've been looking for this for quite some time.  I've played with MediaMonkey and MP3Tag, but they don't seem to measure up quite like MP3/Tag Studio.  I can't seem to have FLAC and APE files renamed with the length in the filename, like xx.yy, where xx=minutes and yy=seconds (e.g., 4.17).  M/TS can do this with MP3s with ease.  I've been a spoiled registered user of M/TS!!  If MT/S had lossless format support along with APIC frame manipulation where album covers could be downloaded from amazon or another album cover repository, I would uninstall the other 2 programs...

Just my 2 cents.  I hope to see these enhancements in the next release of M/TS.

It can be done with Pokisoft's Tag & Rename, but it puts a 0 as a leading digit in the minutes column, so you wind up with "02.45" for the runtime. There are numerous ways to later strip out the unwanted 0 with other programs; my favorite is "Better File Renamer," but there are a dozen others. So it becomes a multistep process, but it's fairly fast with batch processing.

I think what could be done with MP3/Tag Studio is for Magnus to rewrite the program in modules, so that the program would serve as a front end to several different programs. The MP3 engine would stay unchanged, while other modules would read and change Ogg headers in FLAC and Ogg Vorbis files, and another would change ALAC headers (to name three popular lossless formats).

Again, there are a dozen other programs out there that will do this right now. Even free programs like MP3Tag, iTunes, and Media Monkey will handle some of these formats. Unfortunately, they don't offer a fraction of the features and power of MP3/TS. It's up to Magnus to change it, and I suspect it's low on his priority list.

I would indeed like to make the program modularized in the fashion you mention above, and has also thought about it myself a long time ago. The downside is that it would require an extremely time consuming rewrite of large parts of the program, which I sadly just don't have time for at the moment.  :ashamed:
