I have yet to see a portable that I would be satisfied with. I'm interested in the type with notebook hard drives, the emphasis being on storage space more than physical size. I still want a portable for the convenience factor, though. The limiting factors for these tend to be one or more of the following:

-Hard drives don't have enough capacity. (iPod)
-Computer interface is too slow. (anything USB 1)
-Extras that I don't want. (Archos Recorder, Rio)
-Poor build reputation. (Archos)
-"Special" software. (iPod, Creative, Rio, etc)
-LCD too small. (any of the above)

The closest I've seen so far:
< The Neo Jukebox >. They even sell them without hard drives. But it's still USB 1, which makes copying files a real pain.

If anyone hears about new HD-based portables, I would sincerely appreciate a reply  :)

A friend of mine recently bought the Archos Jukebox.  He's pretty happy with it and I thought it was nice enough.  He bought the FM modulator and is using it in his car now.  Pretty good playlist management and seems easy enough to use.

I'll let you know how it holds up, but there haven't been any issues so far.
