Hi there,

I've got this html file full of bookmarks here that was left over from a de-installation of Opera 7.5 and new installation of Opera 8. Sort of gone wrong, if you ask me...

In short, is there any way to convert this html file into some readable version of bookmarks, no matter in what browser. The html was created with Opera, but, rather strangely, Opera has no option to import html files.

I've tried bookmark converter. No luck there. Just wondering if anyone knows anything... otherwise I have to do it all manually....which would teach me to keep better backups, I guess.

Cheers,

If you mail me this html file, after putting it in a zip file (important), I can take a look at it and tell you what's up if you want.

Hi Magnus,

thanks so much for the offer. I'll email it to you in a bit. I should also add that I've tried various browsers and many settings with bookmark converter to try and re-convert this html file.

I can open it alright with a browser, but importing won't work. It seems to be the formatting that is unrecognisable.

Cheers,

Ok, I've taken a look at the file, and it has some non-standard html based format, which is on one hand of course convertable back, but it would take some writing of special code, which I sadly don't have time for right now if it's only to save a single bookmark file. :(

It seems very strange that Opera would only leave behind an unimportable html file with all the bookmarks though, so chances are that Opera itself might be able to import it some way, and turn it back to normal Opera bookmarks. Have you asked them (i.e. the Opera people) about this?

Also, it would be interesting to know exactly why this html file was produced, and if it is some new feature in Opera or something like that. Depending on the answer to that, I might want to write conversion code for it myself.

If anyone knows more about these mysterious html based Opera bookmark files, please post it here anyway.

Hi,

no, I haven't asked Opera yet. I might do that later.
But indeed, it seems to be the case the you can export bookmarks into an html file in Opera but not vice versa. There simply is no option for it. Maybe that is something to programme for them.

Thanks for your efforts.
