Topic: moving .mp3 files and other files....< Next Oldest | Next Newest >

Magnus,

Each folder for my MP3s corresponds to it's album name.  However, I want to rename all of my folders using a string building template.  I've been playing around with the absolute paths in the renaming from tags utility, but my problem is that I have other files in the directories with my .mp3s that are not being moved.  They are an .m3u file, a checksum file, and a .log file from EAC.  All I can seem to accomplish is moving the .mp3s to a new folder, but it leaves behind all the other files in the old directory...

What am I doing wrong?

Thanks

You are not doing anything wrong. Mp3/Tag Studio was designed to process mp3 files, and hence other files are not moved (since they don't have any tags the program can't know where to move them). I know that such a feature sometimes would be very nice to have when processing full albums in separate directories though, but it's not there right now. :(

Magnus, this is similar to what I'm trying to do. Why can't the program simply rename the original folders, instead of trying to move the files into new ones?

If this is possible, it would the problem of non-mp3 files getting left behind.

Is this possible?

Thanks :)

The problem is that the whole processing method would have to be modified. Instead of processing the files one by one, all the files in the directory would have to be read first, to see if they have consistent info, and then, if they have, the directory can be renamed. But maybe I can add an option/tool to rename the current directory according to the info of a randomly picked file in the directory (since the files should all have consistent tag info when performing such an operation anyway, it should be ok). I've thought of it before too, but didn't come up with a smooth enough way of doing it, but I guess I can think some more about it. It is after all an operation that can come in handy sometimes, I have needed it too in the past.

Magnus,

You mentioned that if you were to implement such a feature, you would be unsure of how to handle directories with inconsistent tags. What if the user was able to set parameters to dictate what the program should do in such situation?

Such as:
If inconsistent artist tags ---> Use "Various Artists" when renaming folders

If inconsistent album tags ---> Do not rename folder

What do you think?

Yes, that is quite a good way to do it, but the downside is that it would even more diverge from the default processing scheme of the program, having negative effects on usability and all-over ease-of-understanding of the program for users. :(

The question is if this feature is worth that, and that is what I will think about while considering it for a future update. It might very well be worth it though, depending on how seamless it can be implemented, so don't lose hope just yet. ;)

Well... I guess I'll eagerly await your next release then... Thanks for the consideration! :)

I didn't see anyone mention the next release? ;)
No, but seriously, there are many things on my list, and all of them don't make it into the first update after they have been suggested. Just so you won't be disappointed when the next update comes out I mean. :p
