Forget about it.  I've just tracked the problem down to another program which I almost always run when I'm using mp3/tag studio.  It seems, sometimes, to hang around when I think I've closed it.

Sorry for the false alarm.

Hehe, I'm glad it worked out.

Btw, please don't edit out your the original post in a thread like this, it is better that everyone else can see it in the future when searching for the same issue, maybe having the same solution. Please post a reply to your own post instead.

Okay, to repeat.

Often when I have finished re-tagging/nameing a directory full of .mp3 files (accompanied by images and text files) I would find that, on trying to move it to it's proper place in my baroque (appearance, not musical style -- though that is there too) directory structure I get a message that some other program was holding on to the file.  Then I wouldn't be able to finish the move and clean up my working directory until I re-booted the machine.

One of the programs I use is the old free-ware text editor, EditPad.  It turns out that in some cases (and I haven't figured out the conditions, and there is no longer any support) when you close EditPad it DOESN'T close.  I vanishes from the tool bar and from the desk top, but if you look in the task manager it is still sitting there -- and holding on to the file it was last used to edit.

So, now when I get the "can't delete" message CTL-ALT-DEL and look for EditPad -- as a process, not a application -- and "end" it.
