Topic: Winamp can do it, why not Tag Studio?, ID3 v.1 tags...< Next Oldest | Next Newest >

When loading some files into Winamp that has only the ID3 v1. tag which is truncated when using Fileinfo, the correct ID 3 tag shows in Winamp playlist window...

Even though the tag is truncated it shows correctly..

When I use tag Studio to rename files based on ID 3 tags, the filename becomes incorrect due to that the tag is truncated.. but if Winamp can show the correct information, Tag Studio should be able to get the same info...

If you need a song to test this on, mail me @ djbana@nightfly.fm

I don't understand what you mean.
Please clarify, and sure, send me a sample mp3.

Thanks.

I believe that what he means is that in winamp, if both a v2 and v1 tag exist, winamp will grab it's information from the v2 tag and display it.  If not, then it grabs the v1 info and displays it.  Hence, the problem is that if the v1 information is truncated (but not in v2 since it has additional storage area for strings) the rename function is only using the v1 data to do the rename instead of looking up the v2 info.

I could however be entirely mistaken.

You could however be entirely mistaken, yes. ;)

Mp3/Tag Studio, with it's default settings, always uses the contents of the ID3v2 tag primarily. If the file has no ID3v2 tag, the ID3v1 tag will be used. It can be configured to do the other way around from the global settings though.

The sample file that DjBana sent me did not contain any ID3v2 tag at all though. Winamp instead got its data from a Lyrics tag that was also present in the file.

Mp3/Tag Studio does not support lyrics tags, since they are only an obsolete non-standardized add-on to ID3v1-tags, which can be fully replaced by ID3v2 tags instead. I will not encourage use of such non-standard tags, since it will only result in problems for everyone in the end.

For all files having this problem (data in Lyrics tags that are not in the ID3 tags), simply use Mp3/Tag Studio to insert that info into the ID3v2 tag instead, and all will work fine. Lyrics tags are very rarely seen in mp3s these days anyway, so it should not be a big problem in any case.

Maybe there's a utility to dump out the Lyrics tags to a csv list, to make import/conversion easier? I would try http://www.mpegx.com/ as a starting point.

That's a very good idea.

If anyone finds such a tool, please tell us about it here on the board!

All the ripping groups (see www.mp3hq.net if you dont understand) use lyrics3 v2 over id3 v2, which is why its a problem!

What, are you really sure about that? I have not seen a single group release that has lyrics tags in it? Could you give me some examples of big group names that use lyrics tags in their releases then?

RNS, tAS, aPC are a few.. others too such as XXL do too. Those are RnB/Rap groups and that's all id know about. Most only use it fot just the Title, but others use Artist & Album too. Other groups use it with MP3 Vaccinator to just to insert an mp3data-crc into the lyrics tag. Its widely used in many ripiing groups All of the ones mentioned, infcat all rnb/hiphop ones at least have completely boycotted id3v2. They only use id3v1 & lyrics3 v2.

I had a proper look at my mp3s, and it seems RNS have used lyrics3 far less in 2002.. styles, lsp ego, ksi are some other examples, whoa use it sometimes too.

In response to the original enquiry - Tag can do thsi (www.ca5e.tk). Use a simple command line such as:

tag.exe --rentag --scheme "A - T" *.mp3

Tag only supports id3v2 reading, so gennerally its only good for renaming unless you want to use lyrics3. You may want to look in Tag.cfg to change the illegal character replacemens when renaming. (its very clever, and changes " to '' (2 single quotation marks) which is indistinguishable in windows)

Oh, well, maybe if I get some spare time I'll implement limited read-only-support for Lyrics3 tags, but I won't promise anything though. As you say, it's getting less used every day, and will hopefully disappear soon. It's such an ugly 3-minute-hack format, completely inferior to ID3v2. :disagree:

To be honest, i dont like lyrics3 either, but more of my progs disagree with id3v2 than lyrics3 (!;).

Still read only would be good... as would removing them, and hopefully lyrics3 > id3v2 conversions.
