I am trying to clean up the mp3 files on my computer. A lot of the mp3s' have numbers at the start (example: 10 - Artist - Title...

Is there a template that will get rid of the numbers from the start? Thank You

If your files are named like that:
number - artist - title.mp3

You can use "auto tag from filename", in advanced mode to set the ID3 tag in the MP3 file.
In this case:
<TRASH> - <Artist> - <Title>.mp3

This will tag your MP3s with the artist and the title.
Afterwards, you can go to "auto rename (from tags)" to rename your files. Setting that to <Artist> - <Title>.mp3 will rename your MP3s the way you want...

I bet there is a much smarter way to do it, but that's how I'd do it... :)

Yes, there is a smarter way. :)

Simply use the "Direct rename files" tool with the following templates:

Expected:
Code Sample
<TRASH> - <Artist> - <Title>.mp3

Output:
Code Sample
<Artist> - <Title>.mp3

Bam! All your files are renamed to the desired pattern in a few seconds.

Thanks for your post anyway Fredrik, it makes me very glad to see people helping each other on the board like this, it's exactly what the board is for! Please don't hesitate to do it again (you could always get back at me by posting a smarter solution than me for some other problem :p), and that goes for all of you reading this too. And it's always interesting to see different solutions to the same problem anyway.

And by the way Fredrik, you don't need to use the advanced mode for the templates in your post, neither is it needed for the templates in this post.

Here's one that went along with this, in a big way.

The majority of my mp3s had track numbers in them. The thing is, the program that I used did not add a separate field for the track numbers; it actually added the track numbers onto the beginning of the title. For instance:

whereas most programs would be:

<10>/<song title>

mine read:

<10 song title>

So, the tracks were part of the title field. I found a way to take those out of there; I used the filtering to erase the numbers from the beginning of the title, one number at a time (I did all the "1"s, then the "2"s, etc...)

It was a rather long process, because I have over 3900 mp3s. Is there an easier way to do this?

Yes, using an advanced mode filter like this, you could have filtered them all out in a single sweep:

Code Sample
§1 or §2 or §3 or ...

Please see the help file for more info about the advanced mode fields of the filter.

I thought so... *lol*
See? I learned something new also. I've actually never touched "direct rename files" before.

I belive, that the only one who knows MP3/TS' full potential, is it's author. Now, the rest of us are here to learn :D

Don't worry, I'll pay enough attention here, to get you back one day.... :)
