A large percentage of my MP3s files are corrupt in some way and it seems as if the tags (V2.3) are damaged.  WMP9 can’t play them, iTunes 6 can play them but can’t read the tags, although Musicmatch & Real Player can read the tags & play the files.

I ran a fix test on a small number of files and the results were positive.
I deleted the tags (I can’t remember how) and used MP3TagStudio to create new tags and write tag values.  The files now play in WMP and WMP & iTunes can also read the tags.  I’m very relieved as I thought the audio data may have been corrupt.

Now I need to run a batch conversion process to fix all my files as I have a lot.  Ideally, the batch process needs to remember the tag field data from the damaged tag and copy it to the new one.  That’s unlikely to be supported; therefore, I guess it will need to be done in stages:

1. Change the file names so that they consist of the tag fields that I need to keep.
2. Delete all tags.
3. Recreate new Tags.
4. Fill tag fields from filenames.

I’m sure Tag Studio can handle 1 & 4 above, but can it also handle 2 & 3?
I know I’m asking a lot, but it does do just about anything I can imagine :)

Cheers, Crow

To answer my own question, yes, it can do all of the above.

After a bit more experimentation, I’ve discovered that the problem is with the V2 tags.  If I delete those, then the files work fine with all programs.  So, I figure that I’ll check that all my files contain filled V1 tags and then delete the V2 tags.
If I need V2 tags in the future, I can recreate them and synchronize with V1.

The problem now is that Studio Tag hangs when I try to search my complete library.  I’ve noticed this in the past and I get around it by breaking the search up into 6 or so smaller searches.  My library is unusually large, around 25,000 tracks, so that may be the problem.  Fingers crossed and I may have sorted my errant files situation.  Phew. :)
