I have 20,000 MP3s organized in folders by artist and album. 17,000 of them do not have genre tags and I'd like to start tagging them. While I'm a huge huge fan of MP3 Tag Studio, I don't think I'll ever get them all tagged using MP3TS alone because the machine they are on is at home and the time I tend to find to ID genres tends to be an hour here and there on planes or traveling (i.e. when the files themselves are not accessible). So, I've exported from MP3TS a CSV list of path;artist;album;title;genre. I've imported the list into Excel and written a few macros to help fill in the genre field. I'll end up with an XLS file that has all of the above fields, and has all the blanks filled in for genre. My question is, how to use that list to apply the genre to the genre field. I thought "tag from list" would work, but I now believe that only works in one directory at a time. The other thing I've come up with is creating a cell in Excel which combines text fields to create a rename command (i.e. rename m:\path\song.mp3 to song.blues.mp3) copying those into a batch file, running it and inserting the genre into every file name. I can then go to MP3TS and tag from filename (<trash>.<genre>.mp3). Subsequently I can use a renaming program to take out that word. Still, this seems like a very convoluted process and I suspect there's a more elegant way to do this using either the Command Line tool or tag from list and not having to rename 17,000 files twice (which seems like a quick way to turn my collection into gibberish if I am not careful). Using this, you could auto-tag any number of files in any number of directories in a single sweep. You do say you have a "path" field in your CSV file, is this the full path of the file? In that case, no problem! end |
