Often I hear of people taking the plunge to re-rip their collections - especially as encoders change and popular wisdom evolves as to what encoder settings are 'best'.

So I have ripped my collection and have invested loads of time in *manually* fixing up tags, e.g.:

- Corrected errors in CDDB data collected during the ripping process (spelling etc)
- Added my own genre data
- Some of the file names have been edited / renamed / "normalised"

So my MP3's now have, in effect, some unique tags and file names.

Now I want to re-rip my entire collection with a better encoder! What I want to do is export all the tags from my existing collection and somehow get them re-applied to the new re-ripped collection (which will have 'bad' tags from the CDDB databases all over again).

(I thought maybe I could create a local CDDB database and use that before re-ripping, but I don't have the CD id's associated with the tracks now on my PC so how could my local CDDB database be constructed from a collection of MP3's?)

I guess what's needed is some kind of 'soundex' search to attempt to match the tag data in the new files to my 'corrected' data from the old files. There would need to some kind of "review" UI to confirm if the program was making the correct assumptions....

This seems a bit complex, both to implement and to use, although I'm sure some people would indeed have use for it.

But as long as the filenames are the same, you can transfer all tags very easily, simply by first exporting them to a list using the list maker, and then import them with the "Tag/rename from list" tool. See what I mean?

Ah, yes, I see thanks. The only 'gotcha' would be if the filename had changed, right? In that case what happens (if there's no match fould in the list of tag data that's being applied)? Does it just not re-tag these files, and produce an exception list?

Renamed files would be skipped, and an error message would be inserted for each of them in the status message log for the list import operation.
