Hi,
recently, i installed mozilla 1.2 b2 and after a google search, came across you bookmark converter. first, the default location of the bookmarks.html file is several folders under where the default location is. secondly, when trying to convert ie6sp1 favorites to mozilla 1.2 b2, all seems to go well. an inspection with windows explorer shows a nice new healthy file size of 52kb of the bookmarks.html file. upon opening mozilla and accessing bookmarks, they arent there! inspecting the bookmarks.html file again with explorer reveals that mozilla seems to have overwritten the converted file with the default file. am i missing something here? is this a bug?

is there some kind of file protection implemented in mozilla 1.2b2? i did this several times to confirm it and each time, the old bookmarks.html file overwrites the new bookmarks.html file created with bookmark converter.

Ok, after reading Dan Petus thread on this subject, it seems if you remove the bookmark.html file before converting your ie6 favorites, it works.

Does anybody know if this "file protection" is configurable in Mozilla? It seems like quite a stupid idea in the first place if you ask me anyway...

Couldn't guess as to why Mozilla preserves the bookmark file in this way. Just started using it myself. Doesn't seem to be a configurable option. It only happened to me during the initial convert to Mozilla bookmarks. As mentioned, deleting, or renaming, the file when Mozilla is completely exited (not running in the background) got the conversion to work. After that, no more problems. I can now routinely convert and sync between IE, Mozilla, Phoenix and Netscape with one click.
One would think that an overwrite would be equivalent to a delete/create. 
This behavior is consistent to when there exists no bookmark file and the default one is generated. Unless an overwritten bookmark file is somehow invalid or different from an newly written bookmark file, I don't see how Mozilla would be able to tell the difference.

I think exactly the same!
And no, there is absolutely no difference between the files if they are newly created or overwritten by BMC, which is why this is very weird, just like you say.

I have a similar issue between two versions of Phoenix. I have a build of 0.4 from 10/29 and another build from 12/09. Due to the differences, if I use BMC to convert the 12/09 build's bookmarks to the 10/29 build's, the 10/29 build crashes on boot. Simply deleting the bookmark file allows me to start it up again, though.
Might be somewhat related, but I don't know.

I've just installed a nightly build of Phoenix to see how development is comming along. Seems that the trick of deleting the bookmark file (see above) no longer works with this version, for me at least. Phoenix keeps restoring the original converted bookmark file upon restart. Also, Phoenix doesn't seem to like the Mozilla name for the bookmark toolbar anymore.
This could be because I'm not usning an official release, though. One thing I've noticed is that this problem doesn't exist with the default bookmark file created by Phoenix, but I don't see anything special about the bookmark file. A parent.lock file exists whenever the browser is open. Perhaps this has somethingto do with it?The updated roadmap for Mozilla states that after 1.4 they will switch Mozilla's default browser component from the XPFE-based navigator to the standalone Phoenix browser. After August, this problem may become more than just a nuisance for a niche browser used by enthusiasts.

Monilla.org just officially released Firebird (Phoenix) 0.6. This release does include a change where the bookmarks no longer appear in the "Bookmark Toolbar Folder" after BMC conversion due to the new boolean flag added to the tag in the bookmark file.

I know that you are already aware of this, so I'm mainly posting this to help other readers of the forum who are also Phoenix/Firebird users. I'm also using this as an opportunity to ask, when we may see a new build with this fix (and a similar fix for Opera)? As a testament to this tool, I've gotten so dependent on BMC that I've been delaying using the latest versions of browsers in hopes that your tool will catch up!

Thanks for the info as always Dan, both the Mozilla fix and the Opera fix (and multi-tab bookmarks and other stuff) are already implemented in an update that's lying around on my harddisk right now. It's not really finished yet though, and I have to get some time to do that, but if you want to help beta test this unstable version with these new features, and hence help getting it released faster, you are very welcome. Just send me an email and I'll arrange for it.
