error opening shlext.und (3.5 beta 17)
This results after attempting to tag from filename via Explorer context menu.
Almost certainly due to corrupt mp3 file, which I'd be happy to send you if it could help diagnose this error.
After this error occurs, Mp3-Tag Studio 3.5 is somehow corrupted in memory and is unable to perform any other normal functions until I restart the computer (Windows XP Pro, SP2; all latest updates applied as of 2007.01.30).
Even if I launch the application, rather than using the context menu, it gives 'out of memory' errors.
After restart, everything works fine again until I attempt to operate on the particular mp3 file.

I'm sorry I disagree that this is due to faulty MP3 files. I have a brand new built Windows 7 machine, fresh installation of MP3Tag. It doesn't work to right click and MP3 and select 'rename from tag'. The error you describe comes up. I have to open MP3Tag and then select the correct folder and then rename the files.
It's a great programme, but I have to admit this is slightly irritating and I would appreciate any help fixing it.

The situation that gkeraunen describes above is indeed normally due to an mp3 file with a corrupted ID3v2 tag having been processed. Sometimes this first crash could corrupt the "shlext.und" file though (belonging to Mp3/Tag Studio), which in turn continues to cause crashes in the Mp3/Tag Studio shell extension until that file is fixed too, even when trying to process healthy mp3 files.
First of all, please search your harddisk for the file "shlext.und", and delete it when you find it. Then the error message about it should disappear.
Did that fix the problem with the "shlext.und" error message?
Also, for the possible mp3 files that cause the crashes to begin with (which in turn normally is what corrupts the shlext.und file), simply remove/delete its tag completely from inside Mp3/Tag Studio, and then retag it. Then it should be fixed.

Hi there,
I am having the same problem, with every mp3 file.
I can't even find the file (shlext.und).
Explorer always crashes when trying to rename by tag on Windows 7.
It used to work on my Windows XP.

Has anyone found a fix for this yet. Im runnin windows7,,, and any time I use the right click menu i get this error, and then a prompt crash of Explorer. But if I do the actions through that actual program interface,,,,all is good. This was a SUPER useful part of the program for me. I hope this gets addressed. Im loving windows7 but when it breaks the good stuff.......dag!

It might be that your user account doesn't have privileges to write the shlext.und file to the desired directory (the Mp3/Tag Studio install folder if I'm not mistaken). Please try to give these access privileges to you user and try again.

I am logged in as administrator, using Windows 7, I doubt I don't have that privilege, but how do I make sure?

I Solved this same problem in Windows 7 32 bit
by installing and running a utility called "Take Ownership" from< http://www.howtogeek.com/downloads/TakeOwnership.zip >
(The utility modifies the registry, so I suggest backing it up first.)
Did not need to change any permissions, etc. Just run this utility on the Mp3TagStudio Program folder (typically ...\Program Files\Magnus Brading Software)

can you provide a proper file of "shlext.und" and I will try to copy manual into the right folder (which is the install folder as you wrote).

It should work to just create an empty file (0 bytes in size) if you just want to set its permissions.

I tried that already with the empty file. But this was/is not working.
No Shell extention on right click available...
