I'm having trouble using the advanced field options; MP3 Tag Studio displays (for example) <Album:3> as an invalid field name. Only <TRASH:#> actually works. The same goes for multipart fields.

This is MP3 Tag Studio 3.01, and it doesn't seem to work in any input box that allows advanced mode.

Please show the entire template string that you are trying to use, and I will tell you what's wrong.

In the Direct Tag Manipulation tab, I want to do the following:

replace
<Title>
with
<Album:3>-<Title>

So I tried to put <Album:3>-<Title> in the left-side box and <Album> in the right-side box, but apparently it does not parse correctly.

You have misunderstood the functionality of the advanced mode templates in the "Direct tag manipulation" tool. The template to the left is not a parsing template, it's a string building template (please see the help file for further definition of these terms, look for "templates" in the index).

Right now the "Direct tag manipulation" tool cannot parse other fields, it can only assemble new fields from the full contents of other fields.

To parse fields like you want, would require a much more complex setup, first specifying which fields to parse, then entering parsing templates for these, selecting which fields to target, and finally entering string building templates for these. The reason I haven't implemented this is that quite few users would understand how to use such a setup. I do have some currently dormant plans for such a "super advanced mode" for this tool though.

Magnus - would the super-advanced mode of Direct Tag Manipulation be the answer for the Split Tags issue?

That would be very cool.

Yep, it most certainly would. That would practically be the most simple example of what it could be used for. :)
