-Brading Software Message Board +--Forum: Bookmark Converter Support and Bug Reports +---Topic: Maintaining Bookmark Order started by crj Posted by: crj on May 18 2003,06:11 I am moving my bookmarks to a new computer (IE5/NT to IE6/XP). I have been looking for a way to move them while maintaining the order from the old computer. Your 3.0 description says that it maintains the bookmark order. I successfully converted the files from the old computer to the new computer, but the order on the new computer is alphabetical, just like you get when you do just a straight export/import. I had the sort box unchecked. The order is still correct in the old browser. Any thoughts? As an aside, I couldn't find anywhere where the bookmark order is actually stored. Where the heck to they store it? Posted by: Magnus Brading on May 18 2003,15:42 You cannot do a direct IE to IE conversion between two machines if you want to preserve the order (this is because Bookmark Converter will need access to the registry of both computers to read the old order data and write the new order data). There is a relatively simple solution though: On the old computer, install and run Bookmark Converter, and convert your IE bookmarks to a Netscape bookmark file. Copy this file to the new computer. Install and run Bookmark Converter on the new computer, and convert the Netscape bookmark file you created earlier back into IE favorites. They will then get the correct ordering. Posted by: Second on Jan. 06 2004,12:58 I wanted to post that (below), but it seems it is taken care of already also I am posting (or not posting, becouse these questions are already asked by other) some other things, that is the 6th "and the last one is not very clear, but anyway: 6. sorting - I have a compliant - after merging my Opera and IE bookmarks - my MANUAL ordering (not alphabetic) of favorites was re-ordered in some different way. Then I used some other tool (or again merge) from Bookmark Converter - and my manual ordering was restored maybe this should be taken into account - to do not alter user-adjusted order if "sort..." is not selected. ....Hmm... the more I use it the more I think that it works OK, I don't know what happened the first time...." Posted by: Magnus Brading on Jan. 06 2004,18:05 Like you say, it should already be working lite that. The order will only be altered if you are explicitly using the sort option. Posted by: valcorman1 on Aug. 29 2007,06:51 I have been having sever sorting problems described above. I am testing two files, one in firefox ver 2.0.0.6 and netscape 7.2. I get both files identical, and sorted perfectly on both side. I tell bmc to sync, even though no changes were made, no new folders or bookmarks. My seperator keeping personal toolbar folder and bookmark toolbar folder always disappears. All seperators are gone. And worse, alphabetizing is identically screwed up on both sides. The order jumps up and down the alphabet at random Posted by: Magnus Brading on Sep. 02 2007,12:21 Is there still a problem with order if you don't use any separators? There has been some strange problems with separators before. end |
