Topic: Can files be too big?, Errors in mass-setting on a large file.< Next Oldest | Next Newest >

I have a rather large .mp3 file (well, two of them, in fact).  They are  128,235,135 & 129,018,653 bytes, respectively.  They have no tags and I am trying to set some using the Mass Tag Set option.  However I am getting and "I/O error 30" message, and the process doesn't seem to terminate (or else I'm not patient enough).

Is this a known problem, or could there be something else wrong?

I don't think it is purely caused by the size of the files - I regularly rip continuous mix discs that result in MP3s greater than 100 MB, sometimes as great as 200 MB, and edit tags with no problems.

IIRC, IO Error 30 is a read error relating to the device or file being read. Have you used MP3Utility or anything else to check for bad frames, sync errors, etc? That would be my first guess.

It is possible that an error in MP3TS, combined with some peculiarities of the files (large size plus no tags, or similar) could be to blame. I would try checking the file first, and probably run a Scandisk on the drive. I'm not trying to freak you out, but IO 30 is sometimes an indicator of bad sectors on a hard drive, or corrupt blocks/frames on an optical disc.

Since the mp3 files are normally buffered in memory when writing ID3v2 tags to them (i.e. if they don't have any previous ID3v2 tag), the problem might be that you have too little ram memory, and/or a too small swap space in the operating system.

When tagging such large files, it is very convenient to use the "Super fast v2 tagging" option in the "Tagging core" section of the global settings instead, but please read the section in the help file regarding this option VERY CAREFULLY before turning it on.

It might very well also be as Disposable Hero says though, so you might want to look into the health of your disk anyway.

Thanks for the pointer to mp3utility.  I had used Encspot, which only complained about a incomplete final frame on one of the files.  mp3utility found sync errors in two of the three files.  I ran Norton DiskDoctor on the drive and it came up clean, but I didn't to the "thorough" check -- so something may still be flaky.  It is a 40 Gb drive, and the I think the thorough check takes more than over night!

It was an air-check, from a Metropolitan Opera broadcast (Das Rhinegold) almost three weeks ago, and has fallen off the newsgroups, so I'm just deep-sixing it.  Another recording will come around, I'm sure.

So, I'm not certian where the fault lay and I've erased the files in question.

Thanks for the help, and the new tool.

Sync errors are sadly common and often irreparable. However, it is worth attempting repairs before accepting that the file is irretrievably damaged. MP3TS has functions for attempting file repairs. These are located, oddly enough, in the "File Tools" section, "Repair MP3" tab ;)
Magnus has wisely included a "Keep backup copy" option - this allows you to try multiple repair methods if you wish, each one affording you an opportunity to query the underworked Magnus about features and options  3:-)

Another tool which I have found useful is VBRFix. Unfortunately the site seems to be down ATM. It's worth searching for, as it has recovered some files which were not even VBR, and it's free. Latest windows version was 5.3.15, I believe.
