The "Remove tags" option in the right click menu needs to be improved/fixed.

    You should be able to right click on a group of multiple files and choose "Remove tags"!! Right now, you this Remove Tags option is only visible when right clicking on a single file! Why!?

   Allow the program to automatically remove tags when auto tagging files from filenames (eg: an checkable item in the right click menu labeled something like "Remove all tags before retagging"). That way, I can select a group of files, and choose "Retag assumed format" and it will automatically remove the current tags first and then apply the new tags.

:(   Sometimes "Remove tags" doesn't seem to remove the ID3-v1 and ID3-v1.1 tags. Please check the code and make sure that these tags are being entierly removed.

I can't speak for Magnus, but it probably has to do with keeping less cautious users from screwing themselves. Would be nice though. There is an undo option, and I generally think that less cautious users should go to  3:-)

If I understand your goal, might it be better stated as "remove tags that are not being set"? The difference being: since ID3v2 tags involve some file padding, it might be slightly faster to write new tag contents and then clear unwanted tags, than to clear all, write the file, insert new tags (possibly with a padding change) and rewrite the file. Again, Magnus will know better than I do - I am just blathering  :D

Magnus will probably want to see an example of one or more files that do not get their tags stripped properly. I have not run into this myself, though I generally don't bother paying attention to v1 tags.

Yep, I think that is the reason I did it. One potential slip of the mouse should not wield that kind of destructive power. :) But maybe I'll add it in a later version after all. Until then I guess you'll have to start the program from the shell extension menu and use the mass clean tool from there.

You can remove any tags you want by using a sweep with the mass clean tool (optionally combined with the filter) before the auto tag sweep. I think that mixing up the functionality between the different tools too much will ultimately result in a more complex and less usable program. Also, these two sweeps don't take noticeably longer time than putting them in a single combined sweep would do anyway.

Disposable Hero sure knows what I want. :p Send me a sample file and I will analyze it. My guess though is that those files contain some non-ID3-format tag, e.g. a LYRICS3 tags, whose data some programs (erroneously) display as ID3v1 tag info.

Actually it was the Album ID3-v1 (or maybe it was ID3-v1.1) tag. It showed up in Windows Media Player, Windows Explorer, and in other ID3 tag programs, but was not caught by this one.

I'll try and find the file. BTW, how should I send it to you?

I'm not sure you understand what I mean with the non-ID3 tags. LYRICS3-tags can contain info that some programs read into the ID3v1 tag-fields, e.g. the album field, so my guess is still standing. :)

You can mail the sample file to me, and you can find my email address on the Mp3/Tag Studio website (I want to minimize the number of pages on which it is listed, since I get enough spam as it is :().

Uhm, hello? Have you ever heard of a confirmation dialog!?

I really really really need this feature. Retagging is COMPLETELY POINTLESS if the old tags are not removed!

It's already in the todo-list, and until then you can hopefully use the functions from inside the program instead of the shell-extension. From there you can do everything, and then some. :) Stay tuned.

nick283583828:

i use a program called id3kill (headstrong software) to remove the tags before i tag.. though these days i find myself using mp3ts to cler the tag rather than delete it, cos clearing a id3v2 tag and rewriting it involves recreation of the entire file.. twice. (curses@the id3v2 buffoons.. i know the technical resons for putting it at the start, but i still think all the proffered reasons are lame and unnecessary in this modern world of random-access capable systems))..

just use mp3ts to clear the fields of the tag first, then do your tagging op
